Trinity Music Notes:

This week, let's take a closer look at the Gloria.

During the summer, our Gloria comes from the Hymnal 1982 service music and is number S 278, composed by William Mathias (1934–1992), who was a prolific 20th-century classical and choral composer. This gloria is known for its rhythm and energetic accompaniment.

Gloria (short for Gloria in excelsis Deo) comes from the refrain of “glory to God in the highest” from Luke 2:14. It is a hymn of praise of the whole congregation — including the angelic host— that is traditionally sung before the Collect of the day, with the exception of during Advent and Lent.

With the change of the liturgical season comes the change to our service music. What is service music? It is musical settings to sometimes spoken parts of the liturgy, such as the Gloria, the Gradual, the Sanctus, and the Fraction Anthem.
