THE "INDESCRIBABLE GIFT"
We are in the midst of gift-giving season. Much time and effort (and sometimes money) are spent finding something that communicates our love for the recipient. Have you ever been touched by a gift you received? One Christmas my wife presented the gift of a violin to me. Though I started playing the violin in the third grade, it had been many years since I had played. In the moment, I was so touched I could not speak. That kind of moment is the one we shoot for when we give gifts, isn’t it?
While we sometimes hit the mark with a gift, God is the preeminent gift giver. Jesus said in the Sermon on the Mount: “If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask Him!” Matthew 7:11. In displaying his love for us, God gave the gift of his son Jesus. John 3:16. And in Jesus, we can obtain forgiveness of sins, peace, and eternal life. Ephesians 1:7, Colossians 3:15, Romans 6:23. In Second Corinthians 9:15, Paul said “Thanks be unto God for his indescribable gift.”
As you open and give gifts this holiday season, don’t forget to seek the indescribable gifts that God has in store for you. They are more meaningful than the material gifts that all too quickly grow old to us, wear down, and ultimately fade away. God’s gifts are all-satisfying, they are life giving, they are eternal. If you aren’t in Christ (Galatians 3:27), you are missing out on the most important gift ever given; one that is indescribably good!
