Today, June 12, the Church commemorates the 1,701st anniversary of the First Ecumenical Council of Nicaea, convened by the Emperor Constantine in A.D. 325. The council ruled against the heresy spread by Arius, that Jesus was not the eternal Son of God, equal to the Father, but was a lesser being created by the Father and given the title Son of God only because of His righteousness. The council, led especially by Alexander, Bishop of Alexandria, and his deacon, Athanasius, confessed the eternal divinity of Jesus. An early version of the Nicene Creed was adopted by this council, and, later, the entirety of the creed, as we now have it, was adopted by the Council of Constance in A.D. 381.
"We believe in one Unbegotten God, Father Almighty, maker of all things both visible and invisible, who has His being from Himself. And in one Only-begotten Word, Wisdom, Son, begotten of the Father without beginning and eternally; word not pronounced nor mental, nor an effluence of the Perfect, nor a dividing of impassible Essence, nor an issue; but an absolutely perfect Son, living and powerful, the true Image of the Father, equal in honor and glory
–––Athanasius of Alexandria
Lord God, Heavenly Father, at the first Ecumenical Council of Nicaea Thy Church boldly confessed that it believed in one Lord Jesus Christ as being of one substance with the Father. Grant us courage to confess this saving faith with Thy Church through all the ages; through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with Thee and the Holy Ghost, ever one God, world without end. Amen.
