Today is the First Sunday IN Lent (not OF Lent) because the 40 days of Lent do not include the Sundays. Lent starts on Ash Wednesday and, if you do the math, you'll see that there are 46 days from Ash Wednesday to Easter because we exclude the Sundays from the count. Every Sunday is a "Little Easter" and you are encouraged to celebrate by breaking your fast on Sunday.
