ADVENT CHALLENGE: Celebrate the Ember Days this week! Although once common for Catholics, the ancient observance of Ember Days is now an optional (and often unfamiliar) practice. Four times each year, connected with the four seasons and the liturgical calendar, we set apart three days (Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday) for fasting, abstinence, and prayer. The Ember Days related to winter and Advent begin after the Feast of St. Lucy. On these days, we fast (eating only one main meal), abstain from meat on Friday, and pray. Celebrate the Ember Days this week as a way to go a little deeper into your Advent spirituality. Make additional time for prayer or spiritual reading and prepare your heart for Christmas with a “fast before the feast.”

A Request for Prayers: We join with Pope Francis in asking all Catholic faithful in the Archdiocese of Milwaukee and throughout the world to unite in prayer for Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI as his health is declining. May our Lord Jesus Christ comfort him, and when it’s his time grant him a peaceful passing to his eternal reward. – Archbishop Jerome Listecki, Auxiliary Bishop James Schuerman & Auxiliary Bishop Jeffrey Haines

A prayer to St. Gerard Majella, the patron of expectant mothers, from Archbishop Listecki:

Dearest St. Gerard,
Throughout your religious life,
you sought to serve God’s will
by helping the poor, the sick, and mothers in labor.

As a humble servant of God,
your prayers for expectant mothers helped ease the dangers and excessive pains from childbirth.

Help us to accompany pregnant mothers who experience difficulties of any kind.

Let us work to be beacons of hope, love, and compassion for both mother and child.

We ask that you guide us in serving God’s will by making our parish a safe haven where all life is respected with the dignity given by God, the Creator of all life.

Amen
