Pagan Holidays July 26th: Norse festival for Sleipnir Asatru (ancient Norse) holy day

Sleipnir was the horse that the God Odin was famous for riding. The horse had eight legs and legend says, it could travel from Asgard to Midgard to Utgard which basically meant from heaven to earth to the underworld.

Interestingly enough, lore says Loki gave birth to Sleipnir when he took the form of a mare. As Loki returned then to his human form, he offered the c**t to Odin as a gift.

Sleipnir: Asatru (ancient Norse) holy day. Festival celebrates Odin’s eight-legged steed, Sleipnir. Sleipnir is a shamanic horse is used to travel between states of consciousness. Odin rode Sleipnir between the three worlds of the Asatru (Norse) religion: Asgard (the upper realm of the deities), Midgard (the realm of humans), and Utgard (realm of the shades). The name Sleipnir means “smooth” or “gliding” is the source of the modern English word “slippery”. Some scholars have suggested that Sleipnir had eight legs as a symbol of the eight legs of four men carrying a coffin, becoming a steed to carry the rider into the underworld of Utgard. A stainless steel statue of Steipnir appears in the town of Wednesbury in the United Kingdom (Wednesbury means Wodin’s Hill, and Woden is the Anglo-Saxon name for Odin).

Sleipnir (pronounced “SLAYP-nir”; Old Norse Sleipnir, “The Sliding One”) is the eight-legged horse of the god Odin. Sleipnir is one of Odin’s many shamanic helping spirits, ranks that also include the valkyries and Hugin and Munin, and he can probably be classified as a fylgja. Odin rides Sleipnir on his frequent journeys throughout the Nine Worlds, which are held in the branches and roots of the world-tree Yggdrasil.

The eight-legged horse as a means of transportation used by shamans in their ecstatic travels throughout the cosmos is a motif that can be found in a staggering number of indigenous traditions from all over the world. Sleipnir is “the shamanic horse par excellence,”just as Odin is the shamanic god par excellence.

Sleipnir was born when the god Loki shape-shifted into a mare and became pregnant by the stallion of a giant, as is recounted in the tale of The Fortification of Asgard.
