One of the central truths of the Christian life is that genuine faith produces good works. While the Bible clearly teaches that we are saved by grace through faith and not by our works (Ephesians 2:8-9), it also teaches that true faith will result in a changed life.
Faith is more than simply agreeing with facts about God. Genuine faith is a personal trust in Jesus Christ that transforms the heart and influences the way we live. When a person is born again, the Holy Spirit begins producing spiritual fruit in that believer’s life. Love, obedience, compassion, generosity, and a desire to serve others become visible expressions of an inward reality.
James addressed this truth when he wrote, “Faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone” (James 2:17). He was not teaching that works save us, but that authentic faith reveals itself through action. Just as a healthy tree naturally bears fruit, a genuine believer will demonstrate evidence of God’s work in his or her life.
Good works are not the root of salvation; they are the fruit of salvation. They do not earn God’s favor, but they do reflect a heart that has been changed by His grace. As believers, we should regularly examine our lives, not to determine whether our works can save us, but to see whether our faith is producing the evidence of a living relationship with Christ.
A faith that saves is a faith that shows.
Genuine faith produces good works because genuine faith produces a transformed life.
