This week is the annual Week of Prayer for International Missions!
In 1887, Lottie Moon published a letter to American churches urging them to take up a holiday offering for missions work in China, where she was serving. Her idea may never have gotten off the ground, however, if it hadn't been for her friend and colleague .
In 1888, Annie handwrote 1,000 letters urging Southern Baptists to give toward this effort. The first offering raised $3,313.25, which was enough money to send three new missionaries to assist Lottie with her work in China.
For years, that offering was known as the "The Christmas Offering for China." Eventually, the proceeds expanded beyond China, and in 1918, six years after Lottie's death, it was Annie who suggested the offering be named in Lottie's honor. That offering is now known as the Lottie Moon Christmas Offering.
Every December, our SBC family celebrates the Week of Prayer for International Missions by praying for provision and protection as our missionaries carry out their critical kingdom work. Will you join us in praying for them?
