On July 28th, the Church commemorates the great Lutheran composer, organist, and lay theologian, Johann Sebastian Bach. Bach endured many tragedies in his life, from becoming an orphan at the young age of 10 to the death of his first wife and several of his children, yet he powerfully confessed the Gospel throughout his life, music, and service. Her served in several different German cities, spending the bulk of his life and career in Leipzig, where he also composed the majority of his works which include both vocal and instrumental works. There he was responsible for the music in all four of the Lutheran churches in the city including the famous Thomaskirche (St. Thomas Church, where he has been interred) and Nikolaikirche (St. Nicholas Church). Bach wrote primarily for the liturgical life of the Church and marked most of his music with the phrase “Soli Deo Gloria” – “to God alone be the glory.”

Let us pray: “Almighty God, beautiful in majesty and majestic in holiness, You have taught us in Holy Scripture to sing Your praises and have given to Your servant Johann Sebastian Bach grace to show forth Your glory in his music. Continue to grant this gift of inspiration to all Your servants who write and make music for Your people, that with joy we on earth may glimpse Your beauty and at length know the inexhaustible richness of Your new creation in Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with Your and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.” Amen.
