Jesus told this story to those who trusted in themselves — those who believed their goodness could make them right with God. That mindset is dangerous, because righteousness isn’t something we can earn. It’s a gift only Christ can give.

Everyone remembers the whale.
Almost no one remembers why it swallowed him.

The Book of Jonah isn’t a story about a fish — it’s a story about a prophet who couldn’t stomach the idea that God’s mercy might reach people he despised.

Jonah didn’t flee because he was scared.
He fled because he was offended.
God told him to go to Nineveh — the capital of Assyria — Israel’s enemy. A violent, pagan empire. The last place Jonah wanted to see God bless.

He didn’t want revival there.
He wanted revenge.
He wanted God’s justice for them and God’s mercy for us.

Sound familiar?

Jonah’s nationalism wrapped itself in religion. He believed God belonged to his side — his people — his country. And when God showed mercy to “those people,” Jonah threw a tantrum.

The whale wasn’t the plot. It was the consequence — God’s way of saying, “You can’t outrun My love, even when you don’t agree with who it’s for.”

Today’s church should take notes.

Because when we start acting like Jonah — deciding who’s worthy of grace and who isn’t — we stop following Jesus and start worshiping our own reflection draped in a flag.

And if we don’t change course soon…
God may have a whale waiting for us too.

Banned Books Week

10/09/2025

Censorship is so 1984.

Today kicks off , an annual observation started more than 40 years ago in response to a sudden surge in the number of book challenges in libraries, schools, and bookstores. Sound familiar?

George Orwell’s cautionary tale '1984' warns us about the dangers of censorship. This year’s Banned Books Week theme reminds us that the right to read belongs to all of us, that censorship has no place in contemporary society, and that we must defend our rights.
