Knights of Columbus Announce Catholic Essay Winners

The Knights of Columbus Council 3743 of St. Aloysius recently announced the parish winners of the Catholic Citizenship Essay Contest, an annual Knights of Columbus national contest. The goal of this yearly program is to involve young Catholics in civic discourse and instill in them religious and life-affirming values. The contest encourages youth in the community to become citizens grounded in their faith through creative writing.
Students were invited to write a 500–750-word essay on the theme,

“Out of the 267 Popes that led the Catholic Church, who are your three favorite popes and why?”

Twenty-three eighth graders in Lisa Mongrue’s Social Studies classes submitted essays. Eleven graders were involved in the two rounds of rigorous grading in October. Essays were judged on grammar, style, and how clearly, they presented the theme in a way that shows creativity, imagination, and overall development of the topic. The identities of the students were kept confidential during judging.

This year’s 1st Place winning essay was written by Henry Politz, who received a $125 cash award and a framed certificate. His essay now moves on to the district level competition.

The 2nd Place winner was Nadim Khuri, who received a $75 cash award and a framed certificate.

The awards were presented at the St. Aloysius all-school assembly on November 10th. Pictured below are Nadim Khuri and Henry Politz with Lisa Mongrue, 8th Social Studies Teacher and Jon Reise, Knights of Columbus. Also pictured are Henry Politz with his parents, and Nadim Khuri with his mother.

SILVER ROSE PROGRAM AT ST. ALOYSIUS

Since 1960, the Knights of Columbus has conducted the Silver Rose program. A limited number of sculpted silver roses are carried from Ontario, Canada, through several states to Monterrey, Mexico. On its journey through Louisiana, the Silver Rose stopped at St. Aloysius Parish on Thursday, October 30th. A Rosary prayer service was held in the church after the Silver Rose arrived. Brother knights and parishioners were in attendance. Thanks to chairman John Waitz who organized this event and all of the brother knights for their roles in the program. We especially thank Aline Landry for her help in promoting the event.
