This past week, Pope Leo XIV released his first encyclical—“Magnifica Humanitas” (Magnificent Humanity)—in which he addresses the Church and the broader world on the opportunities and dangers presented by Artificial Intelligence (AI).

Drawing on a powerful biblical contrast, Pope Leo juxtaposes the Tower of Babel with Nehemiah’s rebuilding of Jerusalem. Through this imagery, he challenges humanity to decide whether we build the modern world upon God-given values that uphold the dignity of every human person, or upon purely human values centered on efficiency, productivity, and profit.
