Su***de is a public health crisis and it is vital that faith communities respond. Next week is National Su***de Prevention Week and as such, the Chaplain's Office is offering a one day training for you.

Soul Shop is an interactive workshop that equips participants to care for those impacted by suicidal desperation. Soul Shop workshop attendees will learn:

How to prevent su***de in your community
The signs of su***de risk and warning signs
How to ask a person at risk if they might be thinking about su***de
How to be a companion to those experiencing su***de loss
About local and national resources available for su***de prevention
What the Bible has to say about su***de
How to integrate su***de prevention into your faith life
The workshop includes training in su***de awareness and basic conversation skills, and how to extend the invitation to those who have been suicidal in the past to share their stories. This workshop engages the question of how to cultivate a soul-safe culture within our campus community.

Soul Shop will be held Thursday, September 10 from 9 AM - 3:30 PM. Lunch is provided for attendees and there are break times built into the schedule. The location of the event will be shared when you sign up to participate. The workshop is open to all faculty, staff, and students.

If you are interested in joining the training, please email me to RSVP by 5 pm on Monday, September 7.

Today at 3PM join us for a Highland Cow TIP-ping Scavenger Hunt!

We know the start of the semester is busy and comes with a lot of information. This afternoon, members of the Student Life Team have placed mini highland cows around campus with tips, tricks, and words of encouragement for you as your semester begins. There are even prize cows that have gift cards to Morningside Coffee. When you find a cow, you can keep it and the note of encouragement to get you through the academic year.

Buildings that have mini highland cows:
• Alphin
• Brown Chapel & Fine Arts
• Lyon
• Derby
• The MAC

We hope you will enjoy the cow TIP-ping event!

Classes are meeting and the semester is officially underway. Chaplain Maggie offers this prayer for you as you begin this year and enter into your coursework.

“Source of all knowledge, we thank you for our ability to study at Lyon. We know that a lot will happen in the coming weeks, and so we turn to you to ask your blessing upon our time of study.

Teach us that to listen to the sound of your voice and give us the signs of your presence with us. May your reassurance come in a laugh shared in newly formed friendship. May it come with the confidence in our skills in our chosen course of study. May it come in a kind word or encouragement from our professor. However it comes, we hope that we are able to listen and adjust our study accordingly. And may we be mindful to uplift and encourage others in their educational journey.

When we are stressed, provide us relief. When we are successful, may we find ways to celebrate. When we fail, may we use that moment as a source of learning.

In all that we learn and do, may we find ways to uplift your kin-dom and create a strong community at Lyon. Amen.”

First year students have moved in, returning students are in the process of moving in, fall athletes are busy preparing for their season to begin, faculty are putting finishing touches on courses, and SCOT Week is underway. If you are feeling a little overwhelmed, looking for a space to pause in the chaos, wanting to learn more about worship opportunities in our community, or need a prayer and some good coffee, make your way to Ellebracht Chapel this Sunday.

Join Chaplain Maggie this Sunday, August 16 for a special edition of Chapel Hour during SCOT Week. She will be there with some scones and coffee and to offer a prayer and some words of encouragement as we prepare for matriculation and the start of classes.

Ellebracht Chapel is located in Brown Chapel & Fine Arts Building. Ellebracht Chapel is located on the right-hand side of the building, as you look at the Brown from Couch Garden. Chaplain Maggie will have the door propped open and signs to help you find your way to the coffee and scones.

See you Sunday at 9 am in Ellebracht Chapel.

Tomorrow, August 11 is a big day in the life of Lyon. It is our first move-in day for freshmen and transfer students. It is an exciting time and one that carries many emotions for both the student and their support system. As such, Chaplain Maggie offers this prayer for our new students and their support system as the chaos and joy of move-in day commences.

God, our Creator, we ask your blessing as we mark this new chapter in the life of these students and our community. We are grateful they chose Lyon to be their new home. We give you thanks for those who nurtured and cared for them throughout their childhood. May our students be reminded that their support systems uphold them even in this new phase of life and learning. And may they find support in this new home in the coming days.

"Grant us wisdom, grant us courage, for the living of these days."

We know that there are many questions and will be more in the coming hours. What is my roommate like? Does the cafeteria have good food? What if I don't know what to major in? What will class be like? Will I really make lasting friendships? With these questions, we know we are already forming relationships and making choices that will set our course here at Lyon. Grant us all a sense of peace as these choices and relationships shape us.

"Grant us wisdom, grant us courage, for the living of these days."

As we make Lyon our new home, we think of our other home, the place we come from. It was a place we could not wait to leave as we awaited this day. But we have already begun to miss this place and our people. We even miss our anxious sibling who so desperately wants to take over our bedroom. Our parents, who told us they couldn't wait for this day to arrive, are now they are hesitant to say their goodbyes.

"Grant us wisdom, grant us courage, for the living of these days."

God, who calms the storms, calm our anxieties, fears, and doubts as we enter into this new phase of life. We ask for your care and support in these next few days and years that our minds will be stretched and we will find our place at Lyon.

"Grant us wisdom, grant us courage, for the living of these days."

Amen.
