Sometimes we get discouraged thinking, “I’m just one person… what difference can I really make?” It can feel overwhelming when the needs around us seem so much bigger than anything we’re able to give.
But over and over again, I’ve watched the Lord take small, simple acts of willingness and multiply them in ways that only He can. Just like the two fish and five loaves in Scripture — The miracle wasn’t in what the people gave, but in what the Lord did with what they brought him. They simply trusted Him with what they had, and He multiplied it.
That has been on our churches heart this week as we watched our very small church family, only about 15 people (with some being kids), step forward with open hands. People sometimes misunderstand an online church setting, but we worship together, study together, pray together, and tithe together just the same. We’re not paying staff or running programs — we simply gather, worship, learn, and then look for ways to pour everything God provides right back into our community.
This year, we felt led to provide Thanksgiving food for one family. That was it. We had two extra turkeys and thought, “We can at least do this.” Then Walmart ran a sale that made feeding a family possible for around $40. And little by little, without pressure or planning or any big campaign, hearts opened… and the Lord multiplied.
Our little group ended up providing full Thanksgiving meals for 13 families — several with multiple children, one family with nine kids. It wasn’t because we’re big or strong or well-funded. It wasn’t because anyone tried to make a moment out of it. It was simply because God takes what is offered willingly and uses it to meet needs we could never meet on our own.
Watching that unfold has stirred something in us. We’re praying about starting something annual — similar to Angel Tree, but focused on Thanksgiving. A “Feed a Family” or “Adopt a Family” outreach where families who are struggling can sign up (or be signed up by someone who knows them), and others can commit to blessing them with a meal.
There is truly no better picture of the church than bearing one another’s burdens. It is not our job to judge who is or isn’t deserving. Our role is to listen to the Holy Spirit, to obey, and to give with the same openness God shows us every day. He examines our hearts. Others answer for what they do with what they receive. But when we step out in obedience, we never know the seed being planted or the hope being restored in someone’s life.
All He asks for is a willing heart.
He will take care of the multiplying.
