The U.S. Census Bureau estimates that more than one in four residents of Brinkley in east Arkansas live in poverty. For residents under age 18, the estimated poverty rate is closer to 1 in 2.
Praying about the problem wasn't enough to satisfy Steve and Leah Williamson, who help oversee the city's Mustard Seed Garden. Methodists have helped grow 2,565 pounds of produce this year, and Baptist volunteers are helping to distribute the harvest. It's all happening next to the Williamsons' place of worship, Brinkley First United Methodist Church, on land the water department has leased for $1 a year.
