Mary Jo “Josie” Works
Mary Jo “Josie” Works, of Geneva, passed away unexpectedly on the night of May 5, 2026.
Josie was the beloved daughter of Matthew Works and Katie Baginski, and the cherished sister of Charlie Works and Henry Works.
A student at Geneva Middle School South, Josie was an eighth grader who excelled academically, earning High Honor Roll recognition throughout her middle school years. She was an accomplished violinist and an active member of the school’s Fiddle Club.
Josie lived life with tremendous energy and enthusiasm. A gifted and determined athlete, she participated in numerous sports, often balancing several at once, including taekwondo, boxing, softball, wrestling, water polo, track, and cross country. Her drive, resilience, and competitive spirit were matched only by her creativity and kindness.
Josie found joy in many things. She loved reading, anime, ramen noodles, matcha with tapioca boba, and the occasional Monster energy drink. She was also a talented artist who created countless drawings, paintings, and ceramics throughout her life. These treasured works will remain precious reminders of the beautiful, imaginative, and extraordinary person she was.
One of Josie’s most endearing qualities was her playful sense of humor. She was rarely without a tune on her lips, often whistling as she moved through the house, and she delighted in making perfectly timed fart noises that never failed to make her brothers irritated. These little moments of silliness captured Josie’s joyful spirit and the lighthearted energy she brought to those around her.
Josie touched the lives of everyone who knew her with her intelligence, humor, creativity, and fierce determination. She will be deeply missed and forever loved.
She was welcomed into eternal peace by those who preceded her in death and who surely greeted her with open arms: her Grandma Martha Works, Papa Al Farmer, and her namesake and great-grandmother, Mary Joe Huber.
Josie’s memory will live on in the hearts of her family, friends, classmates, teammates, fellow scouts, and all who were fortunate enough to know and love her.
Family and friends are invited to gather in celebration of Josie’s life on Saturday, May 16, 2026, at Sanctuary Church. A private memorial for family will be held from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. Visitation for the public will follow from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., with a memorial service beginning at 1:00 p.m. and concluding at 2:00 p.m. A luncheon will be served immediately afterward, where all are welcome to join the family to share memories and honor Josie’s life.
