Judith: “Praiseworthy”
Bashemath: “Fragrant”
Mahalath: “Sickly”

Identities: Wives of Esau: Judith, daughter of Berri the Hittite; Bashemath, daughter of Elon the Hittite; Mahalath, daughter of Ishmael and granddaughter of Abraham.

Contribution: Judith and Bashemath contributed nothing beneficial to Esau’s life, for it is stated in Genesis 26:35 that they “were a grief of mind unto Isaac and to Rebekah.” To marry outside of a godly lineage as Esau did was disgraceful. Sorrow was the end result.

Judith (Aholibamah) bore Jeush, Jaalam, and Korah. Bashemath (Adah) bore Eliphaz, and Mahalath (Bashemath) bore Reuel.

Significance Today: As proven in Biblical times and still evident today, the bond of marriage can make or break the lives of men. The personal life of Esau was destined for hardship and sorrow because he broke the basic laws of his ancestors concerning marriage.
Although God-fearing parents in our society today do not choose the lifemates of their children, in most cases their blessings and judgements are vital. Being unequally yoked in marriage is a condition that results in disaster. Just as the bloodline was valuable in Old Testament Law, Christ’s Blood upon the hearts of those joined together in matrimony during this New Testament Era is vital. In 2 Corinthians 6:14 we read, “Be you not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship has Righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion has Light with darkness?”

Rebekah: “Captivating”

Identity: Wife of Isaac; daughter of Bethuel; Abraham’s niece; sister of Laban; mother of Esau and Jacob; a Hebrew.

Contribution: Set an example for the perfect courtship and marriage, sanctioned by parents (Gen. 24:55-60) and directed by God (Gen. 24:12). Not only was God’s Will accomplished, as well as Isaac’s and Abraham’s, but Rebekah’s own will and the wishes of her family were considered. This situation was rare in Bible history. It is recorded in Genesis 24:58 that she was asked whether she’s wished to go to Isaac as his wife and she replied, “I will go.” She was the viral link in the continuation of the seed of Abraham (Rom. 9:10).

Significance today: Although this marriage and home started with all the Love and Blessings of God, Satan still accomplished his ends through envy and jealousy. Favoritism between the children and parents was used to split the home. Isaac’s partiality toward Esau and Rebekah’s favoritism for Jacob caused jealousy throughout their lives, eventually leading to dissension in what had begun as a model of marriage. Rebekah’s ultimate sin was her deceitfulness and trickery toward her husband. She thus became responsible for Esau losing his rightful blessing from his father. Because Jacob learned and practiced her deceitful ways, he eventually had to flee from his inheritance in order to save his life.
It is recorded in Genesis 25:23 that it was God’s Will that Esau serve his younger brother Jacob. Rebekah, because of her personal wishes, tried to accomplish this through sinful acts. In James 1:20 we read, “The wrath of man works not the Righteousness of God.” A vital lesson can be learned from this. For God’s Will to be accomplished, we have to be patient for His Movings and submit our actions to His Direction

Lot’s Wife

Identity: Referred to as “a pillar of salt”; a woman of S***m; mother of two daughters.

Contribution: Responsible for activating the reality of the wrath of God toward those who openly defy Him. “Therefore is the Anger of the LORD kindled” (Isa. 5:25).

Significance Today: “Remember Lot’s Wife” (Luke 17:23). In speaking to His Disciples, Christ warned them of obstacles, such as pleasures of life, which could prevent one from being ready at the Rapture. Christ reminded them of Lot’s wife because she evidently was not willing to turn her back on the wicked life represented in S***m. The Angels gave several commands to Lot and his family and helped to get them out of the city (Genesis 19:15-24). Although Lot’s wife is a Symbol of God’s Judgment to all those who stubbornly refuse to serve Him and choose to commit their lives to the pleasures of the world. The wickedness of the cities of S***m and Gomorrah is similar to the sinful state described in the First Chapter of Romans. God’s Wrath against sun has sinfulness is recorded as ending in death (Rom. 1:32).

Sarah (Sarai): “Princess”

Identity: “A fair woman to look upon”; “Mother of nations”; wife of Abraham; mother of Isaac.

Contribution: God blesses Sarah by giving her a son named Isaac. God established His Everlasting Covenant with Isaac and with his seed (Gen. 17:19; 21:12).

Significance Today: Sarah is the perfect example of Paul’s teaching in regard to a wife’s qualities. She proved to be loyal, supportive, and submissive to Abraham (1 Pet. 3:6) as he obeyed God in venturing to foreign lands (Gen., Chapter 12).
Sarah’s life was one of tribulation and trials. Her Faith in God was sorely tried on two occasions. After waiting 11 years to become the mother of nations, Sarah grew impatient. Genesis 16:2 records her decision to give her maid, Hagar, to Abraham to bring about God’s Promised Result. Ishmael was born, but he was not the son God would use in His Covenant with Abraham.
Abraham and Sarah continues to be faithful to God and finally, after passing the age to bear children, Sarah did conceive. Isaac was born, and God told Abraham his seed would be called in Isaac. Sarah’s Faith was tried once again when God requested Abraham to sacrifice Isaac on the Altar.

Women Of Distinction: Old Testament

Eve: “Life Giving”

Identity: The first woman; wife of Adam; mother of Cain, Abel, and Seth (in the ancestral line of Jesus).

Contribution: A companion; beginning of reproduction and death, temptation and sin; fulfillment of God’s Plan for life.

Significance Today: Eve’s deception exemplifies the subtlety of Satan. Paul warned the Corinthians (2 Cor., Chapter 11) of the danger of stressing from the simplicity of Christ’s Gospel toward false prophets acting as apostles of Christ. Pal warned that Satan could transform into an “Angel of light.”

God’s Covenant with Creation

Then Noah built an altar to the LORD, and took of every clean animal and of every clean bird, and offered burnt offerings in the altar. And the LORD smelled a soothing aroma. Then the LORD said in His heart, “I will never again curse the ground for man’s sake, although the imagination of man’s heart is evil from his youth; nor will I again destroy every living thing as I have done. “While the earth remains, Seedtime and harvest, Cold and heat, Winter and summer, And day and night shall not cease.”
Genesis 8:20-22 KJV

Genesis 1:1-31 KJV

1 In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.
2 And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.
3 And God said, Let there be light: and there was light.
4 And God saw the light, that it was good: and God divided the light from the darkness.
5 And God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And the evening and the morning were the first day.
6 And God said, Let there be a firmament in the midst of the waters, and let it divide the waters from the waters.
7 And God made the firmament, and divided the waters which were under the firmament from the waters which were above the firmament: and it was so.
8 And God called the firmament Heaven. And the evening and the morning were the second day.
9 And God said, Let the waters under the heaven be gathered together unto one place, and let the dry land appear: and it was so.
10 And God called the dry land Earth; and the gathering together of the waters called he Seas: and God saw that it was good.
11 And God said, Let the earth bring forth grass, the herb yielding seed, and the fruit tree yielding fruit after his kind, whose seed is in itself, upon the earth: and it was so.
12 And the earth brought forth grass, and herb yielding seed after his kind, and the tree yielding fruit, whose seed was in itself, after his kind: and God saw that it was good.
13 And the evening and the morning were the third day.
14 And God said, Let there be lights in the firmament of the heaven to divide the day from the night; and let them be for signs, and for seasons, and for days, and years:
15 And let them be for lights in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth: and it was so.
16 And God made two great lights; the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night: he made the stars also.
17 And God set them in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth,
18 And to rule over the day and over the night, and to divide the light from the darkness: and God saw that it was good.
19 And the evening and the morning were the fourth day.
20 And God said, Let the waters bring forth abundantly the moving creature that hath life, and fowl that may fly above the earth in the open firmament of heaven.
21 And God created great whales, and every living creature that moveth, which the waters brought forth abundantly, after their kind, and every winged fowl after his kind: and God saw that it was good.
22 And God blessed them, saying, Be fruitful, and multiply, and fill the waters in the seas, and let fowl multiply in the earth.
23 And the evening and the morning were the fifth day.
24 And God said, Let the earth bring forth the living creature after his kind, cattle, and creeping thing, and beast of the earth after his kind: and it was so.
25 And God made the beast of the earth after his kind, and cattle after their kind, and every thing that creepeth upon the earth after his kind: and God saw that it was good.
26 And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.
27 So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.
28 And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth.
29 And God said, Behold, I have given you every herb bearing seed, which is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree, in the which is the fruit of a tree yielding seed; to you it shall be for meat.
30 And to every beast of the earth, and to every fowl of the air, and to every thing that creepeth upon the earth, wherein there is life, I have given every green herb for meat: and it was so.
31 And God saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, it was very good. And the evening and the morning were the sixth day.
