DAY 20 — “Courage to Step Out of the Boat”
Scripture Reading: Matthew 14:22–33 (ASV)

Peter steps out of the boat because he hears Jesus’ voice calling him. Courage is not the absence of fear — it is movement toward Jesus in the midst of fear. I believe Toni Morrison best exemplifies this when she says, “If you surrender to the wind, you can ride it.” Courage steps into the unknown trusting the One who calls.

Key Verse: “Come,” he said. Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water and came toward Jesus.” (Matthew 14:29 NIV)
Reflection Question: What step of faith is God calling you to take?
Let’s Pray: Jesus, call me out of the boat. Give me courage to walk toward You in faith. Amen.

DAY 19 — “Courage to Stand in the Fire”
Scripture Reading: Daniel 3:13–18 (ASV)

Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego stand before a furious king and refuse to bow. Their courage is rooted not in certainty of outcome but in certainty of God’s presence. As Lucille Clifton wrote, “Every day something has tried to kill me and has failed.” Courage stands because God stands with us.

Key Verse: “If we are thrown into the blazing furnace, the God we serve is able to deliver us from it, and he will deliver us from Your Majesty’s” (Daniel 3:17 NIV)
Reflection Question: What “fire” are you facing that requires courage?
Let’s Pray: God who stands with us in the fire, strengthen my heart. Help me trust Your presence more than my fear. Amen.

DAY 18 — “Courage to Obey God Rather Than People”
Scripture Reading: Acts 5:27–32 (ASV)

When the apostles are arrested again, they boldly declare, “We must obey God rather than men.” Spiritgiven courage prioritizes God’s voice above every competing voice. As Maya Angelou wrote, “Courage is the most important of all the virtues because without courage, you can’t practice any other virtue consistently.” Courage is the backbone of obedience.

Key Verse: Then Peter and the apostles replied, “We must obey God rather than men [we have no other choice] (Acts 5:29 AMP)
Reflection Question: Where is God calling you to obey even when it’s difficult?
Let’s Pray: Lord, give me courage to obey You fully. Strengthen my resolve to follow Your voice. Amen.

DAY 17 — “Lifted Voices, Shaken Rooms”
Scripture Reading: Acts 4:23–31 (ASV)

When the believers hear of the threats against Peter and John, they do not shrink back — they pray for more boldness. The Spirit responds by shaking the place where they gather and filling them anew. Courage grows in community. But take note of Howard Thurman’s statement, “Community cannot feed for long on itself; it can only flourish with the coming of others from beyond.” Courage is strengthened together.

Key Verse: “And when they had prayed, the place where they were meeting together was shaken [a sign of God’s presence]; and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak the word of God with boldness and courage.” (Acts 4:31 AMP)
Reflection Question: Who strengthens your courage in the faith?
Let’s Pray: Spirit of Power, shake my life with Your presence. Fill me again with boldness to do Your will. Amen.

DAY 16 — “We Cannot Keep Silent”
Scripture Reading: Acts 4:13–22 (ASV)

The authorities command Peter and John to stop speaking about Jesus, but they respond, “We cannot but speak the things which we saw and heard.” Spiritgiven courage refuses to be silenced by fear, pressure, or intimidation. Can you not hear the words of James Baldwin, “Not everything that is faced can be changed, but nothing can be changed until it is faced.” Courage faces what must be faced.

Key Verse: “…for we, on our part, cannot stop telling [people] about what we have seen and heard.” (Acts 4:20 AMP)
Reflection Question: What truth is the Spirit urging you to speak?
Let’s Pray: Lord, give me holy boldness. Help me speak truth with love and conviction. Amen.

WEEK 3 — SPIRIT OF COURAGE
Acts 4:1–31

DAY 15 — “Boldness in the Face of Opposition”
Scripture Reading: Acts 4:1–12 (ASV)

Peter and John stand before religious authorities who attempt to silence their witness, yet they speak with a courage that surprises everyone. Their boldness does not come from education or status but from having been with Jesus. The Spirit gives ordinary people extraordinary courage. As Fannie Lou Hamer declared, “You can pray until you faint, but unless you get up and try to do something, God is not going to put it in your lap.” Courage is faith in motion.

Key Verse: “Now when the men of the Sanhedrin (Jewish High Court) saw the confidence and boldness of Peter and John, and grasped the fact that they were [f]uneducated and untrained [ordinary] men, they were astounded, and began to recognize that they had been with Jesus.” (Acts 4:13 AMP)
Reflection Question: Where is God calling you to speak or act with courage?
Let’s Pray: Spirit of Courage, strengthen my voice and steady my heart. Help me stand boldly for Your truth. Amen.

DAY 14 — “The Spirit of Life”
Scripture Reading: Romans 8:1–11 (ASV)

Paul declares that the Spirit of life sets us free from the law of sin and death. Renewal is liberation — a new way of living empowered by the Spirit. The same Spirit who raised Jesus from the dead gives life to our mortal bodies. As Howard Thurman wrote, “The vitality of the spirit is the measure of life.” Renewal is the Spirit’s vitality in us.

Key Verse: “And if the Spirit of the one who raised Jesus from the dead lives in you, the one who raised Christ from the dead will give life to your human bodies also, through his Spirit that lives in you.” (Romans 8:11 CEB)
Reflection Question: What part of your life needs the Spirit’s life-giving power?
Let’s Pray: Spirit of Life, breathe into me. Renew my strength, restore my hope, and revive my soul. Amen.

DAY 13 — “Those Who Wait on the Lord”
Scripture Reading: Isaiah 40:28–31 (ASV)

Isaiah promises that those who wait on the Lord will renew their strength — not by striving, but by trusting. The Spirit lifts us on eagle’s wings, giving us strength beyond our own. As Fannie Lou Hamer said, “You can pray until you faint, but unless you get up and try to do something, God is not going to put it in your lap.” Renewal empowers action.

Key Verse: “but those who hope in the LORD will renew their strength; they will fly up on wings like eagles; they will run and not be tired; they will walk and not be weary.” (Isaiah 40:31 CEB)
Reflection Question: Where do you need renewed strength?
Let’s Pray: Everlasting God, renew my strength. Lift me above weariness and help me walk in Your power. Amen.
