Communion is not what saves us, and it is not what keeps us saved. But the table does bring us into a holy awareness of the covenant we have with Christ and the way we are treating one another. It invites us to examine our hearts, not in fear, but in reverence, forgiveness, and honesty before God.
There is no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, but there is still a call to come to the table with humility. We do not approach the bread and the cup casually while holding on to willful sin, bitterness, or presumption. Communion protects us by reminding us that grace is not something to handle recklessly. It is a holy gift received with repentance, gratitude, and love.
