The Voice of the Martyrs - USA

The Voice of the Martyrs - USA Serving persecuted Christians in the world's most difficult and dangerous places to follow Christ. His wife, Sabina, was imprisoned for three years.

VOM was founded in 1967 by Pastor Richard Wurmbrand, who was imprisoned in Communist Romania for 14 years for his faith in Christ. In the 60s, Richard, Sabina, and their son, Mihai, were ransomed out of Romania and came to the United States. Through their travels, the Wurmbrands spread the message of the atrocities that Christians face in restricted nations, while establishing a network of offices

dedicated to assisting the persecuted church. The Voice of the Martyrs continues in this mission around the world today through the following main purposes:

1. To encourage and empower Christians to fulfill the Great Commission in areas of the world where they are persecuted for their involvement in propagating the gospel of Jesus Christ. We accomplish this by providing Bibles, literature, radio broadcasts, medical assistance, and other forms of aid.

2. To give relief to the families of Christian martyrs in these areas of the world.

3. To equip local Christians to love and win to Christ their enemies who are opposed to the gospel in countries where believers are actively persecuted for their Christian witness.

4. To undertake projects of encouragement, helping believers rebuild their lives and Christian witness in countries that have formerly suffered Communist oppression.

5. To emphasize the fellowship of all believers by informing the world of atrocities committed against Christians and by remembering their courage and faith.

Sam and Kate serve our persecuted Christian brothers and sisters in Southeast Asia. Kate is among several women who are dedicated to serving severely persecuted Christian women according to their unique needs. The couple writes: “Many of the persecuted Christians we help are women … Their husbands have been taken, jailed or killed for their faith. For me (Sam) to have Kate ministering to our precious sisters with me is important. She can care for and comfort [persecuted Christian women] in ways that I cannot, providing care and support to address the physical, spiritual and emotional needs of our brothers and sisters in Christ. This is the blessing of the body of Christ.”

Perpetua kept a journal as she awaited her ex*****on for following Christ. Learn more about her story in this short video from The Voice of the Martyrs.

Perpetua was part of a small fellowship of new Christians in the ancient Roman city of Carthage, located in what is now Tunisia. On March 7, A.D. 203, Perpetua and other Christians were led into Carthage’s coliseum and killed in front of a bloodthirsty crowd of spectators because they refused to give up their faith in Christ. The killing of Perpetua and others inspired the church to thrive in Carthage and many to follow Christ — at any cost.

VOM workers met with Thongkham’s wife, Sengdara, after he was killed for his Christian faith in Laos. One worker wrote of the experience: “When we met with Sengdara, she was grieving and told us her story through tears. Thongkham had been warned multiple times in the months leading up to his murder. Still, he continued his ministry because he was very bold in his faith. Despite the risks, he knew people need to hear the gospel and encounter Christ.” Details of Thongkham’s killing clearly indicated that his murder had been a well-planned and premeditated attack, so front-line workers moved Sengdara and her children to a safer location.

Sam and Kate serve our persecuted Christian brothers and sisters in Southeast Asia. On July 23, 2024, they were finishing up their morning prayer and Bible study when the phone started to ring. It was one of their team members in Laos. After finishing their devotions, Sam returned the call. “Nothing could have prepared me for the news he would tell me,” Sam wrote. One of his fellow workers in the gospel, Thongkham, had been killed for his Christian faith in Laos. “I’d served for more than two decades in Southeast Asia, but I had never had a call like this one,” he said.
