This Labor Day Weekend we gather for the Fifteenth Sunday after Pentecost. Professor Burton Cooper will be our preacher tomorrow morning at the 10:00 am service. We continue to hear the lesson from Matthew’s Gospel on living together as the disciples of Jesus to serve in the Name of Christ in our world. As our children return to school and the season begins to change, we still remain constant in our faith to follow Jesus’ Way of Love.

There is a fifth Sunday this month and we gather for the Fourteenth Sunday after Pentecost. Next week is Labor Day weekend, the “unofficial” end of summer, but for now we continue with the lovely August that blesses us this year. Tomorrow we will hear again from the Apostle Paul on how we are called to live together as a Christian community.

We had a great Strawberry Shortcake sale for Barre Heritage Day yesterday evening. I hope that we all are able to enjoy Barre Heritage today to celebrate our community.

Tomorrow we gather for the Seventh Sunday after Pentecost as we worship together. In our prayers, hymns of praise and joining together for Holy Communion, we are renewed in our faith and strengthened for service in the Name of the Risen Christ. The summer time also gives us a chance to relax and refresh our bodies and spirits. In our Church Year, this Season after Pentecost is a time for growth in our discipleship, to hear the stories of Jesus’ ministry and teachings and to discover what this means for our lives as we seek God’s peace and justice in our world.

We begin the long Church season of the Sundays after Pentecost with the Second Sunday after Pentecost this morning. Remember, we have switched to services at 8:00 am and 10:00 am! Professor Burton Cooper will be our preacher tomorrow morning. This time in the Church Year has been referred to as, “Ordinary Time.” I hope for us here at Good Shepherd, the time is anything but “ordinary.” In our discipleship call to follow Jesus, even the most ordinary of time is filled with the hints of the Holy Spirit!

We celebrate the gift of God’s Holy Spirit on Pentecost Sunday tomorrow. Fifty days after Easter, the Holy Spirit came to Jesus’ disciples and this is the beginning of our church life together. The Good News of Jesus was told in many different languages and out of the many a unity of believers serves as the basis for our life together in the church. The liturgical color for Pentecost is red, and if you feel so inclined, wear something red for this festival day.

We close out the Easter season with The Seventh Sunday of Easter. This is also sometimes known as “Ascension Sunday” because “Ascension Day was this past Thursday, the fortieth day after Easter. As we have celebrated the Risen Christ these past weeks, now we await Pentecost Sunday, next week, and the coming of the promised gift of the Holy Spirit. This is the time when we as disciples remember the power of God’s spirit of Love to lead us into the world in mission and in witness to the truth of God’s love

Our annual celebration of "Good Shepherd Sunday" takes place today, The Fourth Sunday of Easter. We gather to give thanks to God for Jesus as our Good Shepherd, calling us all by name to follow in his way of discipleship to become the good shepherds of our community. It is a honor for us to be known as the Church of the Good Shepherd in Barre, bringing the care and guidance of shepherds into our faith.
