Vance Cemetery Association, Inc. The Vance Cemetery Association was organized in 1952 and is responsible for maintenance of the graveyard, which is still in use by descendants of pioneer J. H.

Vance Cemetery - One of the earliest settlers of this area was Henry Wells (1850-1923), who first came to the Nueces Canyon in 1866. He founded the town of Bullhead in 1873. The name was changed to Vance in the mid-1880s. In 1875 a guest in the home of the Wells Family, C. Fowler, died and was buried on the family's farm. The land surrounding Fowler's grave became known as Vance Cemetery. Henry We

lls often worked as a coffin builder for members of the community. Rancher Z. Pannell (1862-1925) donated additional land in 1909 for the cemetery and a church. The Vance Baptist Church was built in 1917, the same year Henry Wells gave more land to enlarge the cemetery. In addition to the graves of Fowler and Wells, the Vance Cemetery is the burial site of many early pioneers of this area. Six Civil War veterans are interred here, as well as Veterans of World War I and World War II. Epidemics of diphtheria and influenza in the early 20th century claimed the lives of many area citizens who are buried here. Dear Members,

Hope everyone is doing well. Our home burned down over the weekend we lost everything. Very thankful no one was injured.

I do have most of the cemetery projects and info backed up on OneDrive, but alas the computer is lost as well. Please be patient with me as we get our thoughts together. If anyone has a copy of the old map, I can get a copy made in Uvalde and get it back to you.

We are so blessed for the Nueces Canyon, Leakey, and Rocksprings Volunteer Fire Departments and local EMS that responded and worked thru the night to put the fire out.

Howdy Howdy Members! Well I didn’t look hard on my May calendar thus Memorial Day Weekend snuck up on me. Letters have gone out but in case they don’t reach you in time, our Annual Meeting is THIS Saturday May 23rd. Things will start off at 8am followed by our meal and meeting around noon. Dear Vance Cemetery Family,

Our thoughts and prayers are with all those affected by the recent devastating flooding near our area.

As many of you may know, our canyon has experienced an extended drought for several years. The Nueces was flushed up, but not to any major degree and no damage to the cemetery.

With the recent rains we have been blessed with, there has been settling of gravesites and the soil around them.

We will start tending to those sites this coming week adding topsoil where needed. Please don’t be distressed if you see this as it’s part of the natural settling of gravesites.
