Seeking Silence
When was the last time you got up to watch the sunrise? Or we’re in a place where you could stay up late and watch the stars?
During my study leave time, the night we arrived, we got to the house at about one in the morning. My pastor friends and I were all exhausted, but before we went to bed, we couldn’t help but step outside and admire the view. It had been a long time since I could see the Milky Way. It had been a long time since I could see a clear night sky with all the constellations. We lay down on the patio for a little while and I felt the childhood wonder of watching shooting stars, one after the other.
And in the mornings, I couldn’t seem to help waking up at 6:30 every morning. That’s one of the most beautiful times in Texas. Not yet too hot, I watched the sun come up, I inhaled those earthy morning smells, and heard the creatures starting their day. There is a quiet that occurs in the mornings, when the world is still sleepy and calm. It’s a peace that seeps down into your soul and lets you let go of all your planning and worries and to-do lists.
Our lives get busy. They get so busy that they sweep by, and we barely realize that time is passing, with all we have to do. We need those moments of quiet stillness to ground us in this life, to remind us that there is more than just us and our schedules and busyness. In worship every Sunday, after the announcements, I usually invite everyone to take a breath and settle into this place; to use that moment to let go of all the chatter in your brain, the voice that’s listing off what you have to do that day, worrying about future plans, mentally organizing and bossing you around. It’s important to take time to hush that voice. Turn it off for a little while and settle into the quiet of worship, the peace and presence of God.
We need that quiet and peace, and we need to be intentional in seeking it out. Whether it’s early mornings, late at night, or even stolen moments throughout the day—driving in your car, doing dishes, sipping a cup of coffee—take time to breathe in that quiet and peace, and let those moments of God's presence ground your whole day.
