Backpacks & Brown Bags (Life Matters Because of Christ)

Backpacks & Brown Bags (Life Matters Because of Christ) An outreach ministry of Lewis Memorial Baptist Church, focusing on school aged children & prostitutes in Huntington in need of Christ.

You may make donations through PayPal at [email protected]. Our purpose is to show Christ and share Christ with underprivileged children and women of the streets. This is our 14th year (starting in 2009) to provide some of the children of a local school with food for the weekends. These children otherwise would not have food due to their home lives. Years ago, after the Backpack Ministry was establi

shed, a woman was found in a cornfield in Gallipolis OH, I had read about it in the paper but no one seemed to care after the short insert into the Herald Dispatch. I learned the next week that she was a prostitute and she was the mother of one of the Backpack Kids. I instantly became burdened not only for the children of these women but also for the women. The Lord has blessed us to be able to make a small difference in these two areas. I am often left speechless when I see the doors that have been opened by The Lord. The Brown Bag Ministry is where we put some food in a brown lunch bag along with a Gospel tract. We simply hand out brown bag lunches along with a card with a phone number on it, to call us when they are ready to get off the streets. Each girl (woman) we met gets a fake name such as “Hope”, “Grace”, “Joy”, and even “Patience”. Our goal is to show the love of Christ, to show them that if they chose the path The Lord has laid out for them they CAN make it. Since Nov. 11 2011 we have estimated we have met over 500 girls on the streets of Huntington with new ones getting bags each week. It is our goal to help them get to detox and out of town rehab, most importantly to see that they accept The Lord as their Savior. We have 2 ladies that write letters each week to the girls that are in jail and we have women that do jail visits and when requested we send them Celebrate Recovery Bibles. In the Bible Nehemiah had a broken heart for his crumbled city Jerusalem, his anguish led him to cry out to God. He didn’t run and tell everyone his plan, by not doing this he was able to gather strength in The Lord. Nehemiah went and observed the crumbled walls, devised a plan, rallied the troops and then acted on his God given direction. There were many obstacles before him and his laboring fellowmen. But in Nehemiah 3:12 something jumped out at me while studying. It says “he and his daughters made repairs”. Women were a part of building the walls of Jericho; we women are to be a part of rebuilding the walls of Huntington! To see Huntington change we first must change the hearts of its people. Those that can help others need to extend out a hand of help and those that are in need to too accept it. This will only work if we seek God's will and put our faith and trust in Him and not ourselves. Our teens at church have a genuine love for the Back Pack Kids also, each year they hold a special VBS in the inner city of Huntington to specifically reach out to the Backpack Kids during summer, there has been so many salvations through this ministry outreach alone. This has recently encourage them to open a teen clothing pantry. This Teen Clothing Pantry will be available to our local High Schools, Middle Schools. They have developed a website and QR Code for the counselors to give to the teens and they are able to pick out their own clothing, it's like an online store. The items they pick are then delivered to them or their counselor. We aren’t just here to pass out food, we are here for the long haul, we believe that discipleship is vital in having a solid Christ centered life. Not only do we believe it, but we also see it first-hand. Our ministry verse is found in Jeremiah 29:11-13
“For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the Lord, thoughts of peace and not evil, to give you a future of hope. Then you will call upon Me, and go and pray to Me, and I will listen to you. And you will seek Me, and find Me, when you search for Me with all your heart.”

I am just a “normal” person (using that term loosely). I am a full-time realtor, a daughter, mother, grandmother…and such, The Lord always seems to have a crisis arise when I have down time in my day. I have some amazing 911’s, that’s what I call my friends that are a phone call away to jump in and pick someone up, drop someone off…

You might think there is a lot of Jesus in this and you are right, it’s all about Jesus, He just allows us the privilege to be a part of something awesome. Pray with us that we can continue to form loving friendships with these girls in need and that they will see Christ in us. . We pray that we are able to reach the Backpack Kids at an early age by being a positive influence in their lives that they never feel like the streets, drugs and prostitution are their only choice. We have 3 Brown Bag girls that are doing amazing, all are free from drugs, all 3 have jobs. Two we have know since 2011 and once since 2017.

We have some specific personal needs that have arose in the last week. I've never done this before but I thought I would reach out instead of asking for specific items, I would ask for some major prayers for health.

None of these women qualify for medical assistance or housing assistance, their hourly pay is $13, $14 & $16 an hour. The needs vary but all are very needed.

If you feel led to donate funds, you can directly to [email protected], the funds will go specifically for needs of these 3 woman (and two children).

Backpacks & Brown Bags has some wonderful news! The kids aged Elementary to High School receive their weekend food every Friday. We have people who order the food, deliver it, unpack it from the trailer, put it on the shelves, pack it and deliver it weekly.

This is a multiple people ministry, yet there are weeks that our paths don't cross because some go in during the day, some after school, some run in on the weekends. The cool part is that I don't have to check on anyone, all of my helpers are dependable, reliable an always willing to help.

There are also two different groups that deliver the food to the 3 different schools. For the elementary aged children we put post cards of special events taking place in our Lewis Kids Connection, the same happens for Refuel, the teens ministry.

Two weeks ago we put in the post cards for ReFuels "Not So Traditional Thanksgiving Dinner", inviting the older Backpack Kids. Over 300 teens showed up, that is AMAZING!!! Even MORE AMAZING 34 teens accepted Christ as their Saviour! Guess what...one of those teens was a Backpack Kid ✝️

Since 2009 we have been passing out Backpacks weekly in hopes to reach one of these precious children with Christ. Thank you to those that donate funds to Backpacks & Brown Bags, thank you to those that tithe so the church is able to have the funds to hold events like this, thank you to those that will adopt a Backpack Kid for Christmas, thank you to those that pray for this ministry. Thank you to the teens that will spend this summer being a part of BackPack VBS.

When you are part of a ministry that can't share faces and names, sometimes it's hard for people to see an impact. Please know that we couldn't do this without your trust in us and your being faithful to give to "the least of these".

Theres a new name written down in heaven...and you are a part of reaching this child, and others over the last 16 years.

Happy 14th year anniversary to the Brown Bag Ministry.

I never could have dream where this ministry has taken me, my daughters and my dear friends.

It's not a ministry that you see positive results every week, but it is a ministry that see God working in every day. That's hard to explain, and equally comprehend. The women we have met have changed my heart and my thinking.

Child abuse, just because you turn into an adult by a calendar and how many candles you have on a cake, it follows so many into adulthood.

We love these women, we want them to not just survive but to see them accept Christ as their Saviour and find a new life in Him. It's not an easy ministry and I don't do it alone. The women that help me, help me help them, help me find them, pray for them, befriend them and encourage me to hang in there (haha).

Happy 14th Birthday / Anniversary...mercy how a simple Brown Bag has changed my life, it's our prayer that it has also changed the women of the streets of Huntington, changing it for eternity.

It's that time of year when we are needing some weather related items.

We are in need of socks

We also need the rolled blankets like are found at Walmart. We use about 175 of these each winter. Each Backpack Kid gets one and we give them to the Brown Bag girls also throughout the winter. At Walmart they are $4.22 each.

As always, thank you for loving on Backpacks & Brown Bags

I'm not always able to share things about the Brown Bag girls, it's a private, sometimes painful, heart wrenching ministry. BUT!!!! Look at this sweet message I just received a few minutes ago. My heart is happy, knowing that 13 years of loving on someone, they still think to check in and let you know they are ok, doing well and love The Lord.

Sunday was the 15th Anniversary of the Backpack Kids! It started out as a simple way to share and show Christ to "the least of these". Along the way it has evolved into so much more.

We are still feeding 125+ kids from Elementary to High School each week, they each receive 5 dinner/lunch items, 2 breakfast items, some snacks and a drink when we have those available. While the food is important what they also recieve is The Gospel. There are invitations to youth group activities, school year outreaches for help and fun, the Backpack VBS over the summer, Christmas where with their gifts they recieve a new Bible and any other way we can think of to form relationships with them.

7 main food item times 125 kids, times 40 weeks of school is...35,000. items, not including the snacks, drinks and special bags that the food is put into.

We are able to get our main food items from Menards, AND we get the 11% back! I placed the order yesterday that will last us till Dec. The Lord has always provided funds, ALWAYS, and I don't doubt that He will continue.

How can you help? Mail in your Menards rebates, no matter if it's $1 or $25, when you recieve your rebate back, we would love to have them! By using rebates given to us since January we were able to save $2,668.42 on our order! A dollar is worh more than a dollar to us, it's a way for us to reach these children with The Lord.

If you go to Lewis Memorial Baptist Church you can drop in the offering boxes or find me on pew 3, if you don't, then give me a call and I can pick them up.

Thank you for your faithfulness to support this ministry. We aren't allowed to show the faces of the children due to school privacy, I wouldn't want to show them away...our desire is not to humiliate them, but lift them up and show them Christ.

Here is a very simple way to help the Backpacks & Brown Bags Ministry.

We purchase our food for the 625 main meal items each week, YES, each week! We found that Menards has the best prices and we get the 11% rebate. Please take the time to mail in your rebates, I had one last week for $3.31, that will purchase 3 meal items, so every penny counts.

Fill out your rebate, mail it in and when you receive it back, you can give it to me to use toward our next bulk order. I asked and I can use them with your Information on them!

I sit in pew 3 in the early service Sunday Mornings and Sunday nights. You can also drop in the tithing boxes located by the doors and the office will get them to me.

If you don’t attend Lewis Memorial Baptist Church, just give me a call and we can meet up.

To say I am blessed is an understatement. The Lord knew what I needed in these two. Had a 911 on picking up $2800 (220 boxes to be exact) of food from Sam’s, my girls came to my rescue.

The green looking thing inside the truck bed…Lydia having to crawl back in the truck because the cover is frozen shut.

Organized chaos, it’s my favorite and so are these two.

It's a sweet evening when you get two calls from recovered Brown Bag girls. One called just to talk and tell me that her rent is all paid up, followed by discussions of her new job.

The other girl called to apologize for saying she wanted to throw a brick at my car about 13 years ago. I laughed recalling the event, I told her I appreciated her telling me she was sorry. She said she was having a discussion with someone she was counseling and using our relationship as a positive example, she told her about the brick threat, the person she was counseling asked if she ever told me she was sorry, she didn't think she did, she didn't want to go to bed without apologizing and telling me she loved me. I am so proud of her.

Prayers for Cornerstone and Patience, that they continue to seek The Lord and make wise choices. Praises for 14 year friendships that started with passing out a Brown Bag filled with food and friendship, for the purpose of sharing the goodness of God.
