The King's Daughters Home

The King's Daughters Home King's Daughters Home closed on July 1, 2022 after 131 years of providing shelter to women in Bangor.

The King's Daughters Home, founded in 1891, is a non-profit, inter-denominational Christian boarding home for women. Its purpose is to provide comfortable, affordable living accommodations to women who are in the Bangor area to further their education or start a career. It serves as a stepping stone to young women as they leave the safety and security of their family home and move toward self-suff

iciency and independence. KDH provides students with a reasonably priced alternative to dormitory living and offers caring and encouragement from a married couple who serve as Resident Directors. The home is governed by a Board of Managers consisting of representatives from each of the 12 churches that existed in Bangor in 1891. It is the mission of the Board to provide a stable environment where each resident is treated with kindness, courtesy, and respect based on the principles of the Christian faith.

Just want to make sure everyone knows that the King’s Daughters Home is closed, even though the website is still active. Our volunteer technology assistant has not been able to make the necessary changes yet. Hopefully, soon.

On July 1, 2022, the King’s Daughters Home at 89 Ohio Street was sold to Fresh Start Sober Living to become “Andrew’s House.” After 131 years serving women in our community, we say good-bye to a resource that provided safe, affordable housing in an atmosphere of caring and Christian nurture. It was a “home away from home” for countless women over those many years. The next step in our journey will be to establish a fund at Maine Community Foundation to provide financial support that reflects the intentions of our founders, i.e., ”the promotion of the temporal, moral and intellectual welfare of girls and women. Our presence through providing financial assistance will continue the legacy of KDH and its mission into the future.

We thank everyone who helped sustain the organization through volunteering on the Board or on projects, making donations of money or goods, and helping spread the word throughout the state about our presence as a housing option for young women completing their education or starting a career. Although no longer a physical presence, we hope to still influence the lives of women to help them reach their full potential.

Today we held the 130th Annual meeting of the Board of Managers of the King’s Daughters Union. It was followed by a time of reminiscing, conversation and fellowship. Pictured here are treasurer Bob Alexander, Board members Adrienne White and Gail Brown, and house parents Lauretta and Dave Kulp.

It is with a heavy heart that we announce that the home is now closed. After several years of low numbers of residents and dwindling financial resources, the decision was made to sell the house. We ask for your prayers as we reorganize and move forward with the mission our founders intended.
