MONTHLY MESSAGE FOR JUNE 2026
…..from FR. MICHAEL L. PASTRIKOS, PROTOPRESBYTER

Dear Parishioners,

We are in the beautiful month of June, where we see all the trees and flowers blooming and giving us the understanding that summer is around the corner. We are so blessed upon the earth that we have our health and the experience of life that God has given us to enjoy and to bring us to the realization that without the Lord, we have nothing, but with the Lord, we have everything. He gives us the love and acceptance that we all desperately desire but fail to obtain everywhere else but in Him.

As Orthodox Christians, we do not proclaim to be a perfect Community. We all have our differences and the issues that we need to find solutions to our problems, such as a shaky marriage, a serious illness, from mourning for our deceased loved ones, and to any kind of other form of pain we carry in our hearts, but we always find ways to be with people that we love. We always find ways to do the things that we love to do.

I realize that people with real faith cannot be stopped from finding a way to be with Jesus Christ. Living a sinful life, though, is always the infection of impurity. Sin will take the innocent heart and make it impure.

As your Priest, I have encountered untold numbers of people who say, “Ι don’t go to church, but my heart is with you and the church, and if I can do anything for you, just call me because I am so busy at work.” We hear these things all the time when people try to give an excuse for not coming to Church to worship their Lord. I have always responded to them with these words. “If your heart is in the church, then your body should be there with you. We cannot separate our faith from our body and mind.”

So people who say, “I don’t need to go to church,” need to examine themselves. Where is our zeal and our enthusiasm to be in the presence of Christ? Are we ready to forfeit and sacrifice certain materialistic things in our lives to pay more attention to the needs of our spiritual soul?

Take a few minutes and think about what you have just read. This is the only way we can measure our faith in God. Yes, we all claim to be religious, live a life without outward formalities, even be on a church mailing list, or just send a check to the church to say that you are a member of the Church, but it all means little if we are not living a heart-centered faith that bears good fruit of the Holy Spirit.

I hope and pray that this article has touched you in some way to encourage you to be active in your Church. Just imagine if everyone in the Parish took an active role in their church, how successful our community would be. We must all pitch in and help; that way we can also say that through the efforts of many, our Church, our Parish, has grown to what it is today.

Today, our Church will always be a safe haven for our children; an institution for learning; a place where we can call home, visit, and worship together as a true Orthodox family.

I look forward to seeing you and your families helping out at our Church Festival. I look forward to seeing you helping out in our church activities, and I look forward to seeing all of you in church more frequently.

May our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ bless all of you and keep you on the spiritual path that leads to the gates of Heaven.

Πού είναι ο ζήλος και ο ενθουσιασμός μας να είμαστε στην παρουσία του Χριστού; Είμαστε έτοιμοι να θυσιάσουμε ορισμένα πράγματα στη ζωή μας για να δώσουμε μεγαλύτερη προσοχή στις ανάγκες της πνευματικής μας ψυχής;

MONDAY OF THE HOLY SPIRIT / ΔΕΥΤΕΡΑ ΤΟΥ ΑΓΙΟΥ ΠΝΕΥΜΑΤΟΣ

Today, on the Monday of the Holy Spirit, our Church celebrates the revelation of the Third Person of the Holy Trinity to the world.

“… And in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father, who together with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified, who spoke through the prophets…”

In the Orthodox Church, there is a beautiful and meaningful custom: on the day following a major Feast, we honor the specific holy person through whom that divine event took place.

To help understand this tradition, here are a few familiar examples:

• On the day after the Nativity of Christ (Christmas), we honor the Virgin Mary, who gave birth to our Savior.

• On the day after the Nativity of the Theotokos, we honor her parents, Saints Joachim and Anna.

• On the day after Theophany (the Baptism of Christ), we honor Saint John the Baptist, who baptized the Lord in the Jordan River.

Following this same tradition, on the day after Pentecost Sunday, we dedicate the day to honoring the All-Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is the "Comforter" whom Christ promised to send to His disciples (John 14:16).

On Pentecost, the Holy Spirit descended upon the Apostles, fulfilling that promise and guiding them "into all truth" (John 16:13). Through the Apostles, that same divine grace and truth continue to guide all of us in the Church today.

After the Saviour's Ascension into the Heavens, the eleven Apostles and the rest of His disciples, the God-loving women who followed after Him from the beginning, His Mother, the most holy Virgin Mary, and His brethren, all together about 120 souls returned from the Mount of Olives to Jerusalem. Entering into the house where they gathered, they went into the upper room, and there they persevered in prayer and supplication, awaiting the coming of the Holy Spirit, as their Divine Teacher had promised them. In the meantime, they chose Matthias, who was elected to take the place of Judas among the Apostles.

Thus, on this day, the seventh Sunday of Pascha, the tenth day after the Ascension and the fiftieth day after Pascha, at the third hour of the day from the rising of the sun, there suddenly came a sound from Heaven, as when a mighty wind blows, it filled the whole house where the Apostles and the rest with them were gathered. Immediately after the sound, there appeared tongues of fire that divided and rested upon the head of each one.

Filled with the Spirit, all those present began speaking not in their native tongue, but in other tongues and dialects, as the Holy Spirit instructed them.

The multitudes that had come together from various places for the feast, most of whom were Jews by race and religion, were called Parthians, Medes, Elamites, and so forth, according to the places where they dwelt. Though they spoke many different tongues, they were present in Jerusalem by divine dispensation.

When they heard that sound that came down from Heaven to the place where the disciples of Christ were gathered, all ran together to learn what had taken place. But they were confounded when they came and heard the Apostles speaking in their own tongues.

Marveling at this, they said one to another, "Behold, are not all these which speak Galileans? And how hear we every man in our own tongue, wherein we were born?" But others, because of their foolishness and excess of evil, mocked the wonder and said that the Apostles were drunken.

Then Peter stood up with the eleven, and raising his voice, spoke to all the people, proving that that which had taken place was not drunkenness, but the fulfilment of God's promise that had been spoken by the Prophet Joel: "And it shall come to pass in the last days, that I shall pour out of My Spirit upon all flesh, and your sons and daughters shall prophesy" (Joel 2:28), and he preached Jesus of Nazareth unto them, proving in many ways that He is Christ the Lord, Whom the Jews crucified but God raised from the dead. On hearing Peter's teaching, many were smitten with compunction and received the word. Thus, they were baptized, and on that day, about three thousand souls were added to the Faith of Christ.

Such, therefore, are the reasons for today's feast: the coming of the All-holy Spirit into the world, the completion of the Lord Jesus Christ's promise, and the fulfilment of the hope of the sacred disciples, which we celebrate today. This is the final feast of the great mystery and dispensation of God's incarnation.

On this last, and great, and saving day of Pentecost, the Apostles of the Saviour, who were unlearned fishermen, made wise now of a sudden by the Holy Spirit, clearly and with divine authority spoke the heavenly doctrines. They became heralds of the truth and teachers of the whole world. On this day, they were ordained and began their apostleship, of which the salvation of those three thousand souls in one day was the comely and marvelous first fruit.

Some erroneously hold that Pentecost is the "birthday of the Church." But this is not true, for the teaching of the holy Fathers is that the Church existed before all other things. In the second vision of The Shepherd of Hermas, we read: "Now brethren, a revelation was made unto me in my sleep by a youth of exceeding fair form, who said to me, 'Whom thinkest thou the aged woman, from whom thou receivest the book, to be?' I say, 'The Sibyl.' 'Thou art wrong,' saith he, 'she is not.' 'Who then is she?' I say. 'The Church,' saith he. I said unto him, 'Wherefore then is she aged?' 'Because,' saith he, 'she was created before all things; therefore is she aged, and for her sake the world was framed."' Saint Gregory the Theologian also speaks of "the Church of Christ ... both before Christ and after Christ" (PG 35:1108-9).

Saint Epiphanius of Cyprus writes, "The Universal Church, which exists from the ages, is revealed most clearly in the incarnate advent of Christ" (PG 42:640). Saint John Damascene observes, "The Holy Universal Church of God, therefore, is the assembly of the holy Fathers, Patriarchs, Prophets, Apostles, Evangelists, and Martyrs who have been from the very beginning, to whom were added all the nations who believed with one accord" (PG 96, 1357c).

According to Saint Gregory the Theologian, "The Prophets established the Church, the Apostles conjoined it, and the Evangelists set it in order" (PG 35, 589 A). The Church existed from the creation of the Angels, for the Angels came into existence before the creation of the world, and they have always been members of the Church. Saint Clement, Bishop of Rome, says in his second epistle to the Corinthians, the Church "was created before the sun and moon"; and a little further on, "The Church existeth not now for the first time, but hath been from the beginning" (II Cor. 14).

That which came to pass at Pentecost, then, was the ordination of the Apostles, the commencement of the apostolic preaching to the nations, and the inauguration of the priesthood of the new Israel. Saint Cyril of Alexandria says that "Our Lord Jesus Christ herein ordained the instructors and teachers of the world and the stewards of His divine Mysteries ... showing together with the dignity of Apostleship, the incomparable glory of the authority given them ... Revealing them to be splendid with the great dignity of the Apostleship and showing them forth as both stewards and priests of the divine altars . . . they became fit to initiate others through the enlightening guidance of the Holy Spirit" (PG 74, 708-712).

Saint Gregory Palamas says, "Now, therefore ... the Holy Spirit descended ... showing the Disciples to be supernal luminaries ... and the distributed grace of the Divine Spirit came through the ordination of the Apostles upon their successors" (Homily 24, 10). And Saint Sophronius, Bishop of Jerusalem, writes, "After the visitation of the Comforter, the Apostles became high priests" (PG 87, 3981B). Therefore, together with the baptism of the Holy Spirit which came upon them who were present in the upper chamber, which the Lord had foretold as recorded in the Acts, "ye shall be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days hence" (Acts 1:5), the Apostles were also appointed and raised to the high priestly rank, according to Saint John Chrysostom (PG 60, 21).

On this day commenced the celebration of the Holy Eucharist by which we become "partakers of Divine Nature" (II Peter 1:4). For before Pentecost, it is said of the Apostles and disciples only that they abode in "prayer and supplication" (Acts 1:14); it is only after the coming of the Holy Spirit that they persevered in the "breaking of bread,” that is, the communion of the Holy Mysteries - and in prayer" (Acts 2:42).

The feast of holy Pentecost, therefore, determined the beginning of the priesthood of grace, not the beginning of the Church. Henceforth, the Apostles proclaimed the good tidings "in country and town," preaching and baptizing and appointing shepherds, imparting the priesthood to them whom they judged were worthy to minister, as Saint Clement writes in his first Epistle to the Corinthians (I Cor. 42).

All foods are allowed during the week following Pentecost.

OUR GREEK SCHOOL: BIDDING FAREWELL TO A WONDERFUL SCHOOL YEAR!

Dear Parishioners and Friends of Saint Nicholas,

On behalf of our spiritual leader, Father Michael Pastrikos, our teachers, students and parents of the Greek School PTA, we mark the conclusion of another wonderful school year at our beloved school with immense joy, deep gratitude, and a touch of emotion. Looking at everything our community has achieved over the past months fills our hearts with profound pride, optimism, and hope for the future.

Congratulations to our wonderful and devoted teachers who continue to pass on the Greek language, our rich history, our holy Orthodox faith, and the sacred traditions of our homeland to the next generation.

This joy of achievement is also shared by our wonderful parents, grandparents, and families. Their sacrifices and unwavering dedication support this vital mission to preserve our cultural and spiritual heritage, keeping it alive in the hearts of our youth.

But most importantly, this success belongs to our children, the bright stars of our community. Through their presence, bright smiles, and inspiring progress, they bring life, joy, and beauty to our Greek School, our Church, and our entire Greek Orthodox community.

As we head into the summer, we wish you and your families a blessed, safe, and happy summer! And we look forward to welcoming everyone back in September with renewed faith, love, and enthusiasm to continue this beautiful journey together.

Thank you all from the bottom of my heart for your invaluable and constant support.

With true love and respect in Christ,

Stamatia Ieromonahos

The countdown to our annual Festival has officially begun. To ensure everything runs smoothly, we will be holding our final pre-festival meeting on:

Monday, June 1, 2026, at 6:30 p.m.
in the Large Social Hall of the Church.

This meeting is vital for all Station Captains and every individual who plans to volunteer.

Please make every effort to attend. A successful festival relies entirely on the dedication, teamwork, and active participation of our entire community. Every helping hand makes a difference, and we need everyone on board to help make this work.

We really look forward to seeing you all there!

THE SATURDAY OF THE SOULS BEFORE PENTECOST /

On this Saturday before Holy Pentecost, that is, nine days after the Ascension of our Saviour, the church has a Memorial Service for all who have fallen asleep, as we also commemorate “all those who have piously fallen asleep from the beginning of the age in the hope of the resurrection unto life eternal”.

When the Church prays on Pentecost for the Holy Spirit to bring new life to everyone on earth, we also ask for that same grace to comfort the departed. While they were with us, the Holy Spirit was already working in their lives, guiding them toward eternal happiness. We pray with confidence, knowing that through the Holy Spirit, every soul is brought to life.

It is also important to remember that many Christians throughout the ages have died prematurely or under tragic circumstances—whether at sea, in battle, during famines, or in foreign lands—leaving them without a traditional funeral or memorial service.

Recognizing this, the Holy Fathers wisely established a general commemoration for all departed souls. This beautiful tradition ensures that those who missed out on individual burial rites are never forgotten, but their souls are embraced by the shared prayers of the entire Church."

During the service, we offer a plate of Kollyva (boiled wheat) - symbolizing the resurrection of the bodies from the dead - together with a list of names of our departed loved ones to be prayed for by Fr. Michael.

Please join us in worship as we remember our departed loved ones and all departed souls.

May their memory be eternal.

Apolytikion of Sat. of Souls
Plagal of the Fourth Tone
Only the Creator who out of the depths of wisdom, lovingly governs all things and upon all bestows what is accordingly best for them, give rest to the souls of Your servants, for they have placed their hope in You, our Author and Maker and God.

Kontakion of Sat. of Souls

Give rest, O Christ, among the Saints to the souls of Your servants, where there is no pain, no sorrow, no grieving, but life everlasting.
