JHU Hindu Students Council

JHU Hindu Students Council Our HSC chapter provides a forum for JHU students to learn more about the ideals and practices of Hinduism.

HSC provides a forum for JHU students to learn more about the ideals and practices of Hinduism, through weekly prayer, holiday celebrations, and community outreach. HSC not only aims to foster peace, harmony, and spiritual progress through Hinduism, but also embraces all religions as paths towards universal spirituality. We meet every Sunday at the JHU Interfaith Center, from 10-11am for philosophical discussion, and from 11-12pm for devotional singing, worship, and meditation.

Today is the first day of Diwali! Over the next five days, we will be posting fun tutorials (for chai, rangoli, mithai, etc), performances from our fantastic South Asian teams, and class videos (replacing class dances). Although we are unable to have our usual Diwali celebration, we hope we can capture some of the same magic and joy in this virtual format. Sit back, relax, and enjoy!

Raksha Bandhan, also known as Rakhi, celebrates the bond between brothers and sisters. On this day, sisters tie a rakhi (usually a thread or amulet) around the wrist of their brothers as a symbol of protection against evil and as a prayer for a long and happy life. In return, brothers offer gifts as a symbol of protection from harm. It is also common to tie a rakhi to celebrate other brother/sister-like relationships such as between cousins or close friends. Swipe to see photos of our members’ rakhis!

Happy Varalakshmi Vratham! Today is a holiday dedicated to Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth and wellbeing. It is believed that worshipping Varalakshmi on this day is equivalent to worshipping Ashtalakshmi, the eight goddesses of Wealth, Earth, Wisdom, Love, Fame, Peace, Contentment, and Strength. Varalakshmi Vratham is observed primarily by South Indian women for the wellbeing of their families, and typically involves offering puja and fasting. Swipe to see how members of our community celebrated!

November 20th is celebrated worldwide as Universal Children's Day. This is the day when the UN adopted the Convention on the Rights of the Child. This marks an important time when children were given a voice to stand up for themselves and reclaim their rightful place in society.

We can all work together to build a better future for children by raising awareness and advocating for their rights and inspiring them to raise their voices!

This year, in honor of Universal Children's Day, JFK is holding a virtual campaign to advocate for children's rights. To show your support, on November 20th, please share this post and add a picture or video answering any of the following questions:
-Why is it important to stand up for children's rights?
-How can we better support the children in the world?
-What makes children valuable in society?

With your help, we can spread the word and make a better future for the children of tomorrow. Please tag us in all of your posts and with the hashtags or so we can feature your videos/posts!
