St. James' Episcopal Church-Lafayette Sq.

St. James' Episcopal Church-Lafayette Sq. A Community rooted in Faith and Love. One God, One People, One Church. St. James Mission is "Empowering Believers to Transform their world through Christ." At St.

James’ Church was organized as an independent parish in 1824 by the Reverend William Levington (http://docsouth.unc.edu/neh/bragg/bragg.html), the first black priest to serve as a missionary of the church in the South. The first service was held June 23rd of that year in the “Upper Room” at Park Avenue and Marion Street. James’, the first black Episcopal church south of the Mason/Dixon line, was t

he third black Episcopal congregation established in the United States after St. Thomas’ (http://www.aecst.org) and St. Philip’s (http://www.stphilipsharlem.dioceseny.org/) parishes in Philadelphia and New York. James' is an Episcopal Church and follows the order of worship found in Episcopal churches in the United States and abroad, which is based on the 1979 Book of Common Prayer. James', the celebration of Holy Eucharist is the principal form of worship on Sunday, and services are held at 8.00 a.m. and 10.30 a.m. The earlier service is a spoken service with a homily (short sermon.) The 10.30 a.m. service includes congregational hymns, offerings from St. James' choirs, and a sermon. Music is a treasured part of worship at St. James' and we are proud of our three choirs: the Senior Choir, the Expressions of Faith Gospel Choir, and the Children's Choir. Please note that, on occasion, only one service will be held on Sunday morning. This occurs during the summer months (July and August) and on certain special days in the life of St. James' Parish.
