DAILY SCRIPTURE 5/29/26 FRIDAY John 16:12-15. “I have much more to say to you, more than you can now bear. 13 But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all the truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come. 14 He will glorify me because it is from me that he will receive what he will make known to you. 15 All that belongs to the Father is mine. That is why I said the Spirit will receive from me what he will make known to you.”

Matthew 28:18-20. Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”

Even the greatest minds cannot grasp the Trinity, which says that God is three persons (Father, Son, and Holy Spirit), but also just one. The three persons of God are close in a way that goes beyond the closest human relationships. God invites us to become a part of that community!

DAILY SCRIPTURE 5/28/26 THURSDAY John 7:37-39. On the last and greatest day of the festival, Jesus stood and said in a loud voice, “Let anyone who is thirsty come to me and drink. 38 Whoever believes in me, as Scripture has said, rivers of living water will flow from within them.”[a] 39 By this he meant the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were later to receive. Up to that time the Spirit had not been given, since Jesus had not yet been glorified.

During the Feast of Tabernacles priests drew water daily and poured it out in the Temple, reciting Isaiah 12:3: “With joy you will draw water from the wells of salvation.” Sometimes rituals can become just “going through the motions,” but Jesus’ call was personal. He offered himself as the source of living water, promising the Spirit to those who believe. He then said that “rivers of life” would flow from us, impacting all the lives around us.

DAILY SCRIPTURE 5/27/26 WEDNESDAY Matthew 3:5-11, 15-16 People went out to him from Jerusalem and all Judea and the whole region of the Jordan. 6 Confessing their sins, they were baptized by him in the Jordan River.
7 But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming to where he was baptizing, he said to them: “You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the coming wrath? 8 Produce fruit in keeping with repentance. 9 And do not think you can say to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as our father.’ I tell you that out of these stones God can raise up children for Abraham. 10 The ax is already at the root of the trees, and every tree that does not produce good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire.
11 “I baptize you with[a] water for repentance. But after me comes one who is more powerful than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry. He will baptize you with[b] the Holy Spirit and fire...
15 Jesus replied, “Let it be so now; it is proper for us to do this to fulfill all righteousness.” Then John consented.
16 As soon as Jesus was baptized, he went up out of the water. At that moment heaven was opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting on him.

John 20:21-22 Again Jesus said, “Peace be with you! As the Father has sent me, I am sending you.” 22 And with that he breathed on them and said, “Receive the Holy Spirit.
The Holy Spirit prepared Jesus for his ministry, and the Risen Christ gave the Spirit to his disciples to prepare them for theirs. Jesus shows us that obedience and preparation are crucial to our spiritual lives. Obeying God opens new doors in our lives for receiving God's power. We can do absolutely nothing without the Spirit. We have no power, we are merely vessels for God's power.

DAILY SCRIPTURE 5/26/26 TUESDAY John 14:15-27. “If you love me, keep my commands. 16 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever— 17 the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be[a] in you. 18 I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you. 19 Before long, the world will not see me anymore, but you will see me. Because I live, you also will live. 20 On that day you will realize that I am in my Father, and you are in me, and I am in you. 21 Whoever has my commands and keeps them is the one who loves me. The one who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I too will love them and show myself to them.”
22 Then Judas (not Judas Iscariot) said, “But, Lord, why do you intend to show yourself to us and not to the world?”
23 Jesus replied, “Anyone who loves me will obey my teaching. My Father will love them, and we will come to them and make our home with them. 24 Anyone who does not love me will not obey my teaching. These words you hear are not my own; they belong to the Father who sent me.
25 “All this I have spoken while still with you. 26 But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you. 27 Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.

The Greek word for “Advocate” in verses 16 and 26 is “paraclete,” which can mean Comforter, Counselor, Helper, Intercessor, Strengthener, or Standby. These are all good words to describe how the Spirit acts in our lives. “Advocate” is a word used in court for what we would call a “defense attorney.” The Spirit reminds any accuser that we are loved, saved, and forgiven. Sometimes we are our own worst accuser. In those times, the Holy Spirit cal be the small voice of grace.

DAILY SCRIPTURE 5/25/26 MONDAY John 3:1-8. Now there was a Pharisee, a man named Nicodemus who was a member of the Jewish ruling council. 2 He came to Jesus at night and said, “Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher who has come from God. For no one could perform the signs you are doing if God were not with him.”
3 Jesus replied, “Very truly I tell you, no one can see the kingdom of God unless they are born again.[a]”
4 “How can someone be born when they are old?” Nicodemus asked. “Surely they cannot enter a second time into their mother’s womb to be born!”
5 Jesus answered, “Very truly I tell you, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless they are born of water and the Spirit. 6 Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit[b] gives birth to spirit. 7 You should not be surprised at my saying, ‘You[c] must be born again.’ 8 The wind blows wherever it pleases. You hear its sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone born of the Spirit.”[d]

Nicodemus thought he knew all about faith and salvation, but Jesus invited him to experience a deep, personal renewal from the Spirit. Nicodemus probably felt that he was rather advanced or at least mature in his faith, but Jesus said he had to start all over and be reborn! He also probably felt in control of a lot of his life, but the Spirit is something that no one controls! The Spirit is unpredictable, like the wind. Jesus led him to a life of faith that was less about certainty, and more about an adventure.

Roll the Store Away: Control

05/22/2026

DAILY SCRIPTURE 5/22/26 FRIDAY: Isaiah 55:1-9. “Come, all you who are thirsty,
come to the waters;
and you who have no money,
come, buy and eat!
Come, buy wine and milk
without money and without cost.
2 Why spend money on what is not bread,
and your labor on what does not satisfy?
Listen, listen to me, and eat what is good,
and you will delight in the richest of fare.
3 Give ear and come to me;
listen, that you may live.
I will make an everlasting covenant with you,
my faithful love promised to David.
4 See, I have made him a witness to the peoples,
a ruler and commander of the peoples.
5 Surely you will summon nations you know not,
and nations you do not know will come running to you,
because of the Lord your God,
the Holy One of Israel,
for he has endowed you with splendor.”
6 Seek the Lord while he may be found;
call on him while he is near.
7 Let the wicked forsake their ways
and the unrighteous their thoughts.
Let them turn to the Lord, and he will have mercy on them,
and to our God, for he will freely pardon.
8 “For my thoughts are not your thoughts,
neither are your ways my ways,”
declares the Lord.
9 “As the heavens are higher than the earth,
so are my ways higher than your ways
and my thoughts than your thoughts.

Wanting revenge is natural, forgiving is unnatural. Forgiving is not our instinct, everyone has to learn it. But God's ways are “higher than ours.” Our nature is that, despite their best intentions, people are unfair to each other and hurt each other deeply. Forgiving is love’s power to break nature’s rule. So forgiveness takes faith – we can't always see the rightness of it.

DAILY SCRIPTURE 5/21/26 THURSDAY: Ephesians 4:26-27, 29-32. “In your anger do not sin”[a]: Do not let the sun go down while you are still angry, 27 and do not give the devil a foothold.. . .29 Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen. 30 And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, with whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. 31 Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice. 32 Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.

“Be angry without sinning” might feel a little vague for real life so Paul added timeless wisdom: “Don’t let the sun set on your anger.” Your words can hurt or heal, and you get to choose which words you speak. Since we are not likely to always get the words just right, the passage reminded readers of God’s model of forgiveness. People who are enslaved to anger may think they are free to be themselves, but they are in bo***ge.

DAILY SCRIPTURE 5/20/26 WEDNESDAY: Matthew 18:21-35. Then Peter came to Jesus and asked, “Lord, how many times shall I forgive my brother or sister who sins against me? Up to seven times?”
22 Jesus answered, “I tell you, not seven times, but seventy-seven times.[a]
23 “Therefore, the kingdom of heaven is like a king who wanted to settle accounts with his servants. 24 As he began the settlement, a man who owed him ten thousand bags of gold[b] was brought to him. 25 Since he was not able to pay, the master ordered that he and his wife and his children and all that he had be sold to repay the debt.
26 “At this the servant fell on his knees before him. ‘Be patient with me,’ he begged, ‘and I will pay back everything.’ 27 The servant’s master took pity on him, canceled the debt and let him go.
28 “But when that servant went out, he found one of his fellow servants who owed him a hundred silver coins.[c] He grabbed him and began to choke him. ‘Pay back what you owe me!’ he demanded.
29 “His fellow servant fell to his knees and begged him, ‘Be patient with me, and I will pay it back.’
30 “But he refused. Instead, he went off and had the man thrown into prison until he could pay the debt. 31 When the other servants saw what had happened, they were outraged and went and told their master everything that had happened.
32 “Then the master called the servant in. ‘You wicked servant,’ he said, ‘I canceled all that debt of yours because you begged me to. 33 Shouldn’t you have had mercy on your fellow servant just as I had on you?’ 34 In anger his master handed him over to the jailers to be tortured, until he should pay back all he owed.
35 “This is how my heavenly Father will treat each of you unless you forgive your brother or sister from your heart.”

The debt the servant in the story owed was a whopper, equivalent to 60 million days’ wages (about 170,000 years of work)! Yet the king (i.e., God) forgave him. Then the freed debtor refused to forgive someone with a much smaller debt. At the heart of Judaism and Christianity lies the belief that, though human actions matter very deeply, forgiveness is possible and, through God’s love, can become actual. Jesus assumes that we will need to ask for forgiveness regularly. There is, however, a condition: we ourselves must be forgiving people. A heart so closed that it cannot give also cannot receive.

DAILY SCRIPTURE 5/19/26 TUESDAY: Matthew 18:21-22. Then Peter came to Jesus and asked, “Lord, how many times shall I forgive my brother or sister who sins against me? Up to seven times?”
22 Jesus answered, “I tell you, not seven times, but seventy-seven times.

Some rabbis in Jesus’ day said forgiving a sin three times was enough. That’s likely why Peter thought forgiving seven times was huge. But Jesus says in the following story that God, not us, sets the forgiveness standard. We are challenged to forgive with the same astounding mercy and profound patience we have received from God.
