Worship Bulletin for June 7

The Lord’s Day
June 7, 2026 at 10:30 AM

We welcome you to worship today. It is a privilege to have you as our guest.
As you join us today, begin to worship quietly with personal prayer.
Please turn off your cell phone and turn your hearts and minds toward God.

We prepare for worship

Take a moment and meditate on this as you prepare for worship…

It ought to be a settled principle in our minds, that a man’s soul is in a bad state, when he begins to regard man-made rites and ceremonies, as things of superior importance, and exalts them above the preaching of the Gospel.

Aisquith Life and Opportunities RE Jeff Soule

We praise our great God

Call to Worship Psalm 145:3-7

3 Great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised,
and his greatness is unsearchable.
4 One generation shall commend your works to another,
and shall declare your mighty acts.
5 On the glorious splendor of your majesty,
and on your wondrous works, I will meditate.
6 They shall speak of the might of your awesome deeds,
and I will declare your greatness.
7 They shall pour forth the fame of your abundant goodness
and shall sing aloud of your righteousness.

Invocation

Hymn No. 2 O Worship the King Lyons

O worship the King all glorious above,
O gratefully sing his power and his love;
Our shield and Defender, the Ancient of Days,
Pavillioned in splendor and girded with praise.

O tell of his might, O sing of his grace,
Whose robe is the light, whose canopy space.
His chariots of wrath the deep thunderclouds form,
And dark is his path on the wings of the storm.

The earth with its store of wonders untold,
Almighty, your pow’r has founded of old;
Has ‘stablished it fast by a changeless decree,
And round it has cast, like a mantle, the sea.

Your bountiful care what tongue can recite?
It breathes in the air, it shines in the light;
It streams from the hills; it descends to the plain;
And sweetly distils in the dew and the rain.

Frail children of dust, and feeble as frail,
In you do we trust, nor find you to fail;
Your mercies how tender, how firm to the end,
Our Maker, Defender, Redeemer, and Friend.

O measureless Might! Ineffable Love!
While angels delight to hymn you above,
The humbler creation, though feeble their lays,
With true adoration shall lisp to your praise.

We embrace Christ through His Word

Psalter Reading / Confession of Sin (Responsive) Psalm 32

1 Blessed is the one whose transgression is forgiven, whose sin is covered.
2 Blessed is the man against whom the LORD counts no iniquity, and in whose spirit there is no deceit.
3 For when I kept silent, my bones wasted away through my groaning all day long.
4 For day and night your hand was heavy upon me; my strength was dried up as by the heat of summer.
5 I acknowledged my sin to you, and I did not cover my iniquity;
I said, “I will confess my transgressions to the LORD,” and you forgave the iniquity of my sin.
6 Therefore let everyone who is godly offer prayer to you at a time when you may be found;
surely in the rush of great waters, they shall not reach him.
7 You are a hiding place for me; you preserve me from trouble; you surround me with shouts of deliverance.
8 I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you with my eye upon you.
9 Be not like a horse or a mule, without understanding, which must be curbed with bit and bridle, or it will not stay near you.
10 Many are the sorrows of the wicked, but steadfast love surrounds the one who trusts in the LORD.
11 Be glad in the LORD, and rejoice, O righteous, and shout for joy, all you upright in heart!

Assurance of Pardon Isaiah 53:4,5

4 Surely he has borne our griefs
and carried our sorrows;
yet we esteemed him stricken,
smitten by God, and afflicted.
5 But he was pierced for our transgressions;
he was crushed for our iniquities;
upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace,
and with his wounds we are healed.

Our Confession of Faith Westminster Larger Catechism, Question 117

How is the sabbath or the Lord’s day to be sanctified?
The sabbath or Lord’s day is to be sanctified by a holy resting all the day, not only from such works as are at all times sinful, but even from such worldly employments and recreations as are on other days lawful; and making it our delight to spend the whole time (except so much of it as to be taken up in works of necessity and mercy) in the public and private exercises of God’s worship …

Hymn No. 522 My Hope Is Built on Nothing Less St. Petersburg

My hope is built on nothing less than Jesus’ blood and righteousness;
I dare not trust the sweetest frame, but wholly lean on Jesus’ name.

On Christ, the solid rock, I stand; all other ground is sinking sand.

When darkness veils his lovely face, I rest on his unchanging grace;
In every high and stormy gale, my anchor holds within the veil.

His oath, his covenant, his blood support me in the whelming flood;
When all around my soul give way, he then is all my hope and stay.

When he shall come with trumpet sound, O may I then in him be found;
Dressed in his righteousness alone, faultless to stand before the throne.

Scripture Reading Mark 2:23-28 Pew Bible pg. 838

23 One Sabbath he was going through the grainfields, and as they made their way, his disciples began to pluck heads of grain. 24 And the Pharisees were saying to him, “Look, why are they doing what is not lawful on the Sabbath?” 25 And he said to them, “Have you never read what David did, when he was in need and was hungry, he and those who were with him: 26 how he entered the house of God, in the time of Abiathar the high priest, and ate the bread of the Presence, which it is not lawful for any but the priests to eat, and also gave it to those who were with him?” 27 And he said to them, “The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath. 28 So the Son of Man is lord even of the Sabbath.”

Celebration of The Lord’s Supper

Eternal God, heavenly Father, You have graciously accepted us as living members of Your Son our Savior Jesus Christ, and You have fed us with spiritual food in the Sacrament of His Body and Blood. Send us now into the world in peace, and grant us strength and courage to love and serve You with gladness and singleness of heart; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Hymn No. 184 The King of Love My Shepherd Is Dominus Regit Me

The King of Love my Shepherd is, whose goodness faileth never;
I nothing lack if I am his and he is mine forever.

Where streams of living water flow my ransomed soul he leadeth,
And where the verdant pastures grow, with food celestial feedeth.

Perverse and foolish oft I strayed, but yet in love he sought me,
And on his shoulder gently laid, and home, rejoicing, brought me.

In death’s dark vale I fear no ill with thee, dear Lord, beside me;
Thy rod and staff my comfort still, thy cross before to guide me.

Thou spread’st a table in my sight; thine unction grace bestoweth;
And O what transport of delight from thy pure chalice floweth.

And so through all the length of days thy goodness faileth never;
Good Shepherd, may I sing thy praise within thy house forever.

Benediction and Three-Fold Amen (Hymnal, pg. 740) Danish

Sermon Notes

Date: June 7, 2026
Text: Mark 2:23-28
Sermon Title: “Opposition to His Management”
Delivered By: Pastor Robert Bell

Last Sunday we saw that Mark described Jesus as emphasizing that those who are living in his very presence should be feasting instead of fasting, rejoicing rather than mourning. He now proceeds to picture the Lord Jesus in the act of showing that this manifestation of gladness instead of sadness should characterize even the manner in which the Sabbath is observed (Hendriksen).

Main Point 1: The Old Repentance Rituals

Let’s get this straight right up front. Christianity is not about religious ritual; it’s about a right relationship! Don’t get so caught up in ceremony that you miss Christ!

Main Point 2: The Present Joyous Relationship

Jesus is both the center and the cause of the joy that his disciples experience.

Main Point 3: The New Radical Reality

The twin parables that Jesus now gives are broader in application than to just fasting.
They are a commentary on the significance of Jesus’ presence with us.

O Lord, who has taught us that all our doings without love are worth nothing; Send Your Holy Spirit, and pour into our hearts that most excellent gift of love, which is humble, meek, kind, long-suffering and patient, the very bond of peace and of all virtues: Grant this for Your only son Jesus Christ’s sake. We praise our great God

Call to Worship 96:1-4a

1 Oh sing to the Lord a new song;
sing to the Lord, all the earth!
2 Sing to the Lord, bless his name;
tell of his salvation from day to day.
3 Declare his glory among the nations,
his marvelous works among all the peoples!
4 For great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised.

Invocation

Hymn No. 38 Immortal, Invisible, God Only Wise Joanna

Immortal, invisible, God only wise,
in light inaccessible hid from our eyes,
Most blessed, most glorious, the Ancient of Days,
almighty, victorious, thy great name we praise.

Unresting, unhasting and silent as light,
nor wanting nor wasting, thou rulest in might;
Thy justice like mountains high soaring above
thy clouds which are fountains of goodness and love.

Great Father of glory, pure Father of light,
thine angels adore thee, all veiling their sight;
All praise we would render; O help us to see
‘tis only the splendor of light hideth thee!

We embrace Christ through His Word

Psalter Reading / Confession of Sin (Responsive) Psalm 130

1 Out of the depths I cry to you, O Lord!
2 O Lord, hear my voice!
Let your ears be attentive to the voice of my pleas for mercy!
3 If you, O Lord, should mark iniquities, O Lord, who could stand?
4 But with you there is forgiveness, that you may be feared.
5 I wait for the Lord, my soul waits, and in his word I hope;
6 my soul waits for the Lord more than watchmen for the morning, more than watchmen for the morning.
7 O Israel, hope in the Lord!
For with the Lord there is steadfast love, and with him is plentiful redemption.
8 And he will redeem Israel from all his iniquities.

Our Confession of Faith Heidelberg Catechism, Question 60

How are you made right with God?
Even though my conscience accuses me of having grievously sinned against all God’s commandments and of never having kept any of them, and even though I am still inclined toward all evil, nevertheless, without my deserving it at all, out of sheer grace, God grants and credits to me the perfect satisfaction, righteousness, and holiness of Christ, as if I have never sinned nor been a sinner, as if I had been as perfectly obedient as Christ was obedient for me. All I need to do is accept this gift of God with a believing heart.

Assurance of Pardon (Responsive) 1 John 4:7-10

Beloved, let us love one another, for love is from God, and whoever loves has been born of God and knows God.
Anyone who does not love does not know God, because God is love.
In this the love of God was made manifest among us, that God sent his only Son into the world, so that we might live through him.
In this is love, not that we have loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins.

Hymn Before the Throne Bancroft/Cook

Before the throne of God above
I have a strong and perfect plea
A great High Priest whose name is love
Who ever lives and pleads for me
My name is graven on His hands
My name is written on His heart
I know that while in heav’n He stands
No tongue can bid me thence depart (2X).

When Satan tempts me to despair
And tells me of my guilt within
Upward I look and see Him there
Who made an end of all my sin
Because the sinless Savior died
My sinful soul is counted free
For God, the Just, is satisfied
To look on Him and pardon me (2X).

Behold Him there the risen Lamb
My perfect spotless Righteousness
The great unchangeable I AM
The King of Glory and of Grace
One with Himself I cannot die
My soul is purchased by His blood
My life is hid with Christ on high
With Christ my Savior and my God (2X)

Offertory How Great Thou Art (vv. 1,3,4) O Store Gud
RE Jeff Soule, Bass

O Lord my God, when I in awesome wonder
consider all the worlds thy hands have made,
I see the stars, I hear the rolling thunder,
thy pow’r thro’ out the universe displayed.

Then sings my soul, my Savior God to thee:
How great thou art, how great thou art! (2x)

And when I think that God his Son not sparing,
sent him to die, I scarce can take it in,
that on the cross, my burden gladly bearing,
he bled and died to take away my sin.

When Christ shall come with shout of acclamation
and take me home, what joy shall fill my heart!
Then I shall bow in humble adoration,
and there proclaim, my God, how great thou art.

Scripture Reading Mark 2:18-22 Pew Bible pg. 837

18 Now John's disciples and the Pharisees were fasting. And people came and said to him, “Why do John's disciples and the disciples of the Pharisees fast, but your disciples do not fast?” 19 And Jesus said to them, “Can the wedding guests fast while the bridegroom is with them? As long as they have the bridegroom with them, they cannot fast. 20 The days will come when the bridegroom is taken away from them, and then they will fast in that day. 21 No one sews a piece of unshrunk cloth on an old garment. If he does, the patch tears away from it, the new from the old, and a worse tear is made. 22 And no one puts new wine into old wineskins. If he does, the wine will burst the skins—and the wine is destroyed, and so are the skins. But new wine is for fresh wineskins.”

Hymn No. 689 Be Still, My Soul Finlandia

Be still my soul: the Lord is on your side;
Bear patiently the cross of grief and pain; leave to your
God to order and provide; in every change he
Faithful will remain. Be still, my soul: your best, your heavenly
Friend through thorny ways leads to a joyful end.

Be still, my soul: your God will undertake
To guide the future as he has the past. Your hope, your
Confidence let nothing shake; all now mysterious
Shall be bright at last. Be still, my soul: the waves and winds still
Know his voice who ruled them while he dwelt below.

Be still, my soul: when dearest friends depart,
And all is darkened in the vale of tears, then shall you
Better know his love, his heart, who comes to soothe your
sorrow and your fears. Be still, my soul: your Jesus can re-
pay from his own fullness all he takes away.

Be still, my soul: the hour is hast’ning on
When we shall be forever with the Lord,
When disappointment, grief, and fear are gone, sorrow forgot,
Love’s purest joys restored. Be still my soul: when change and tears are
Past, all safe and blessed we shall meet at last.

Thus was the life of Saul, king of Israel – a great life, to be sure. But what is the point of this summary, when so much of Saul’s reign is yet to be told? The apparent reason is one of charity and appreciation. This is the positive record that can be attributed to Saul: his battles, his family, and his army of followers. If only these things provided the sum of a man or woman! But they do not, and the lesson taught to us by Saul’s decrepit end is that a person’s life is finally assessed not by worldly achievements but by its relationship to the Lord. Richard Phillips

Call to Worship Psalm 102:12-16

12 You, O Lord, are enthroned forever;
you are remembered throughout all generations.
13 You will arise and have pity on Zion;
it is the time to favor her;
the appointed time has come.
14 For your servants hold her stones dear
and have pity on her dust.
15 Nations will fear the name of the Lord,
and all the kings of the earth will fear your glory.
16 For the Lord builds up Zion;
he appears in his glory.

Invocation

Hymn No. 16 Come, Let Us Sing unto the Lord Duke Street

Come, let us sing unto the Lord new songs of praise with sweet accord;
For wonders great by him are done, his hand and arm have vict’ry won.

The great salvation of our God is seen through all the earth abroad;
Before the heathen’s wond’ring sight he has revealed his truth and right.

He called to mind his truth and grace in promise made to Israel’s race;
And unto earth’s remotest bound glad tidings of salvation sound.

All lands, to God lift up your voice; Sing praise to him, with shouts rejoice;
With voice of joy and loud acclaim let all unite and praise his name.

Praise God with harp, with harp sing praise, with voice of psalms his glory raise;
With trumpets, cornets, gladly sing and shout before the Lord, the King.

Let earth be glad, let billows roar and all that dwell from shore to shore;
Let floods clap hands with one accord, let hills rejoice before the Lord.

For lo, he comes; at his command all nations shall in judgment stand;
In justice robed and throned in light, the Lord shall judge, dispensing right.

Our Confession of Faith Westminster Larger Catechism, Questions 103, 104

Which is the first commandment?
The first commandment is, Thou shall have no other gods before me.

What are the duties required in the first commandment?
The duties required in the first commandment are, the knowing and acknowledging of God to be the only true God, and our God; and to worship and glorify him accordingly, by thinking, meditating, remembering, highly esteeming, honoring, adoring, choosing, loving, desiring, fearing of him; believing him; trusting, hoping, delighting, rejoicing in him; being zealous for him; calling upon him, giving all praise and thanks, and yielding all obedience and submission to him with the whole man; being careful in all things to please him, and sorrowful when in any thing he is offended; and walking humbly with him.

Psalter Reading (Responsive) Psalm 78:32-55

32 In spite of all this, they still sinned; despite his wonders, they did not believe.
33 So he made their days vanish like a breath, and their years in terror.
34 When he killed them, they sought him; they repented and sought God earnestly.
35 They remembered that God was their rock, the Most High God their redeemer.
36 But they flattered him with their mouths; they lied to him with their tongues.
37 Their heart was not steadfast toward him; they were not faithful to his covenant.
38 Yet he, being compassionate, atoned for their iniquity and did not destroy them;
he restrained his anger often and did not stir up all his wrath.
39 He remembered that they were but flesh, a wind that passes and comes not again.
40 How often they rebelled against him in the wilderness and grieved him in the desert!
41 They tested God again and again and provoked the Holy One of Israel.
42 They did not remember his power or the day when he redeemed them from the foe,
43 when he performed his signs in Egypt and his marvels in the fields of Zoan.
44 He turned their rivers to blood, so that they could not drink of their streams.
45 He sent among them swarms of flies, which devoured them, and frogs, which destroyed them.
46 He gave their crops to the destroying locust and the fruit of their labor to the locust.
47 He destroyed their vines with hail and their sycamores with frost.
48 He gave over their cattle to the hail and their flocks to thunderbolts.
49 He let loose on them his burning anger, wrath, indignation, and distress, a company of destroying angels.
50 He made a path for his anger; he did not spare them from death, but gave their lives over to the plague.
51 He struck down every firstborn in Egypt, the firstfruits of their strength in the tents of Ham.
52 Then he led out his people like sheep and guided them in the wilderness like a flock.
53 He led them in safety, so that they were not afraid, but the sea overwhelmed their enemies.
54 And he brought them to his holy land, to the mountain which his right hand had won.
55 He drove out nations before them; he apportioned them for a possession and settled the tribes of Israel in their tents.

Our Call to Individually Remember God’s Grace

We Remember the Work of Christ (Responsive) Ephesians 2:11-16

11 Therefore remember that at one time you Gentiles in the flesh, called “the uncircumcision” by what is called the circumcision, which is made in the flesh by hands
12 remember that [we] were at that time separated from Christ, alienated from the commonwealth of Israel and strangers to the covenants of promise, having no hope and without God in the world.
13 But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far off have been brought near by the blood of Christ.
14 For he himself is our peace, who has made us both one and has broken down in his flesh the dividing wall of hostility
15 by abolishing the law of commandments expressed in ordinances, that he might create in himself one new man in place of the two, so making peace,
16 and might reconcile us both to God in one body through the cross, thereby killing the hostility.

Hymn No. 32 Great Is Thy Faithfulness Faithfulness

Great is thy faithfulness, O God my Father;
There is no shadow of turning with thee;
Thou changest not, thy compassions, they fail not;
As thou hast been thou forever wilt be.

Great is thy faithfulness! Great is thy faithfulness!
Morning by morning new mercies I see:
all I have needed thy hand hath provided—
Great is thy faithfulness, Lord, unto me!

Summer and winter and springtime and harvest,
Sun, moon, and stars in their courses above,
Join with all nature in manifold witness
To thy great faithfulness, mercy and love.

Pardon for sin and a peace that endureth,
Thine own dear presence to cheer and to guide,
Strength for today and bright hope for tomorrow,
Blessings all mine, with ten thousand beside!

Offertory Be Not Dismayed, Thou Little Flock (vv. 1,3) J.S. Bach
The Aisquith Choir

Be not dismayed, thou little flock, Although the foe’s fierce battle-shock Loud on all sides assail thee; though o’er they fall they laugh secure, Their triumph cannot long endure: Let not thy courage fail thee.

Our hope is sure in Jesus’ might; Against themselves the godless fight, Themselves, not us, distressing; Shame and contempt their lot shall be; God is with us, with Him are we, To us belongs His blessing.

The Doxology (Hymnal, pg. 731) and Prayer of Dedication

Praise God from whom all blessings flow;
Praise Him, all creatures here below;
Praise Him above ye heav’nly host:
Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen.

Scripture Reading 1 Samuel 14:47-52 Pew Bible pg. 237

47 When Saul had taken the kingship over Israel, he fought against all his enemies on every side, against Moab, against the Ammonites, against Edom, against the kings of Zobah, and against the Philistines. Wherever he turned he routed them. 48 And he did valiantly and struck the Amalekites and delivered Israel out of the hands of those who plundered them.

49 Now the sons of Saul were Jonathan, Ishvi, and Malchi-shua. And the names of his two daughters were these: the name of the firstborn was Merab, and the name of the younger Michal. 50 And the name of Saul's wife was Ahinoam the daughter of Ahimaaz. And the name of the commander of his army was Abner the son of Ner, Saul's uncle. 51 Kish was the father of Saul, and Ner the father of Abner was the son of Abiel.

52 There was hard fighting against the Philistines all the days of Saul. And when Saul saw any strong man, or any valiant man, he attached him to himself.

Hymn All Glory be to Christ Our King Auld Lang Syne
Words by Dustin Kensrue

Should nothing of our efforts stand no legacy survive
Unless the Lord does raise the house in vain its builders strive
To you who boast tomorrow’s gain tell me what is your life
A mist that vanishes at dawn all glory be to Christ

All glory be to Christ our King all glory be to Christ
His rule and reign will ever sing all glory be to Christ

His will be done His kingdom come on earth as is above
Who is Himself our daily bread praise Him the Lord of love
Let living water satisfy the thirsty without price
We’ll take a cup of kindness yet all glory be to Christ

When on the day the great I Am the faithful and the true
The Lamb who was for sinners slain is making all things new
Behold our God shall live with us and be our steadfast light
And we shall ere his people be all glory be to Christ

Benediction and Three-Fold Amen (Hymnal, pg. 740) Danish
