The Lord’s Day
May 24, 2026 at 10:30 AM
We welcome you to worship today. It is a privilege to have you as our guest.
As you join us today, begin to worship quietly with personal prayer.
Please turn off your cell phone and turn your hearts and minds toward God.
We prepare for worship
Take a moment and meditate on this as you prepare for worship…
Thus was the life of Saul, king of Israel – a great life, to be sure. But what is the point of this summary, when so much of Saul’s reign is yet to be told? The apparent reason is one of charity and appreciation. This is the positive record that can be attributed to Saul: his battles, his family, and his army of followers. If only these things provided the sum of a man or woman! But they do not, and the lesson taught to us by Saul’s decrepit end is that a person’s life is finally assessed not by worldly achievements but by its relationship to the Lord. Richard Phillips

Call to Worship Psalm 102:12-16
12 You, O Lord, are enthroned forever;
you are remembered throughout all generations.
13 You will arise and have pity on Zion;
it is the time to favor her;
the appointed time has come.
14 For your servants hold her stones dear
and have pity on her dust.
15 Nations will fear the name of the Lord,
and all the kings of the earth will fear your glory.
16 For the Lord builds up Zion;
he appears in his glory.
Invocation
Hymn No. 16 Come, Let Us Sing unto the Lord Duke Street
Come, let us sing unto the Lord new songs of praise with sweet accord;
For wonders great by him are done, his hand and arm have vict’ry won.
The great salvation of our God is seen through all the earth abroad;
Before the heathen’s wond’ring sight he has revealed his truth and right.
He called to mind his truth and grace in promise made to Israel’s race;
And unto earth’s remotest bound glad tidings of salvation sound.
All lands, to God lift up your voice; Sing praise to him, with shouts rejoice;
With voice of joy and loud acclaim let all unite and praise his name.
Praise God with harp, with harp sing praise, with voice of psalms his glory raise;
With trumpets, cornets, gladly sing and shout before the Lord, the King.
Let earth be glad, let billows roar and all that dwell from shore to shore;
Let floods clap hands with one accord, let hills rejoice before the Lord.
For lo, he comes; at his command all nations shall in judgment stand;
In justice robed and throned in light, the Lord shall judge, dispensing right.
We embrace Christ through His Word
Our Confession of Faith Westminster Larger Catechism, Questions 103, 104
Which is the first commandment?
The first commandment is, Thou shall have no other gods before me.
What are the duties required in the first commandment?
The duties required in the first commandment are, the knowing and acknowledging of God to be the only true God, and our God; and to worship and glorify him accordingly, by thinking, meditating, remembering, highly esteeming, honoring, adoring, choosing, loving, desiring, fearing of him; believing him; trusting, hoping, delighting, rejoicing in him; being zealous for him; calling upon him, giving all praise and thanks, and yielding all obedience and submission to him with the whole man; being careful in all things to please him, and sorrowful when in any thing he is offended; and walking humbly with him.
Psalter Reading (Responsive) Psalm 78:32-55
32 In spite of all this, they still sinned; despite his wonders, they did not believe.
33 So he made their days vanish like a breath, and their years in terror.
34 When he killed them, they sought him; they repented and sought God earnestly.
35 They remembered that God was their rock, the Most High God their redeemer.
36 But they flattered him with their mouths; they lied to him with their tongues.
37 Their heart was not steadfast toward him; they were not faithful to his covenant.
38 Yet he, being compassionate, atoned for their iniquity and did not destroy them;
he restrained his anger often and did not stir up all his wrath.
39 He remembered that they were but flesh, a wind that passes and comes not again.
40 How often they rebelled against him in the wilderness and grieved him in the desert!
41 They tested God again and again and provoked the Holy One of Israel.
42 They did not remember his power or the day when he redeemed them from the foe,
43 when he performed his signs in Egypt and his marvels in the fields of Zoan.
44 He turned their rivers to blood, so that they could not drink of their streams.
45 He sent among them swarms of flies, which devoured them, and frogs, which destroyed them.
46 He gave their crops to the destroying locust and the fruit of their labor to the locust.
47 He destroyed their vines with hail and their sycamores with frost.
48 He gave over their cattle to the hail and their flocks to thunderbolts.
49 He let loose on them his burning anger, wrath, indignation, and distress, a company of destroying angels.
50 He made a path for his anger; he did not spare them from death, but gave their lives over to the plague.
51 He struck down every firstborn in Egypt, the firstfruits of their strength in the tents of Ham.
52 Then he led out his people like sheep and guided them in the wilderness like a flock.
53 He led them in safety, so that they were not afraid, but the sea overwhelmed their enemies.
54 And he brought them to his holy land, to the mountain which his right hand had won.
55 He drove out nations before them; he apportioned them for a possession and settled the tribes of Israel in their tents.
Our Call to Individually Remember God’s Grace
We Remember the Work of Christ (Responsive) Ephesians 2:11-16
11 Therefore remember that at one time you Gentiles in the flesh, called “the uncircumcision” by what is called the circumcision, which is made in the flesh by hands
12 remember that [we] were at that time separated from Christ, alienated from the commonwealth of Israel and strangers to the covenants of promise, having no hope and without God in the world.
13 But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far off have been brought near by the blood of Christ.
14 For he himself is our peace, who has made us both one and has broken down in his flesh the dividing wall of hostility
15 by abolishing the law of commandments expressed in ordinances, that he might create in himself one new man in place of the two, so making peace,
16 and might reconcile us both to God in one body through the cross, thereby killing the hostility.
Hymn No. 32 Great Is Thy Faithfulness Faithfulness
Great is thy faithfulness, O God my Father;
There is no shadow of turning with thee;
Thou changest not, thy compassions, they fail not;
As thou hast been thou forever wilt be.
Great is thy faithfulness! Great is thy faithfulness!
Morning by morning new mercies I see:
all I have needed thy hand hath provided—
Great is thy faithfulness, Lord, unto me!
Summer and winter and springtime and harvest,
Sun, moon, and stars in their courses above,
Join with all nature in manifold witness
To thy great faithfulness, mercy and love.
Pardon for sin and a peace that endureth,
Thine own dear presence to cheer and to guide,
Strength for today and bright hope for tomorrow,
Blessings all mine, with ten thousand beside!

Offertory Be Not Dismayed, Thou Little Flock (vv. 1,3) J.S. Bach
The Aisquith Choir
Be not dismayed, thou little flock, Although the foe’s fierce battle-shock Loud on all sides assail thee; though o’er they fall they laugh secure, Their triumph cannot long endure: Let not thy courage fail thee.
Our hope is sure in Jesus’ might; Against themselves the godless fight, Themselves, not us, distressing; Shame and contempt their lot shall be; God is with us, with Him are we, To us belongs His blessing.
The Doxology (Hymnal, pg. 731) and Prayer of Dedication
Praise God from whom all blessings flow;
Praise Him, all creatures here below;
Praise Him above ye heav’nly host:
Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen.

Scripture Reading 1 Samuel 14:47-52 Pew Bible pg. 237
47 When Saul had taken the kingship over Israel, he fought against all his enemies on every side, against Moab, against the Ammonites, against Edom, against the kings of Zobah, and against the Philistines. Wherever he turned he routed them. 48 And he did valiantly and struck the Amalekites and delivered Israel out of the hands of those who plundered them.
49 Now the sons of Saul were Jonathan, Ishvi, and Malchi-shua. And the names of his two daughters were these: the name of the firstborn was Merab, and the name of the younger Michal. 50 And the name of Saul's wife was Ahinoam the daughter of Ahimaaz. And the name of the commander of his army was Abner the son of Ner, Saul's uncle. 51 Kish was the father of Saul, and Ner the father of Abner was the son of Abiel.
52 There was hard fighting against the Philistines all the days of Saul. And when Saul saw any strong man, or any valiant man, he attached him to himself.

Hymn All Glory be to Christ Our King Auld Lang Syne
Words by Dustin Kensrue
Should nothing of our efforts stand no legacy survive
Unless the Lord does raise the house in vain its builders strive
To you who boast tomorrow’s gain tell me what is your life
A mist that vanishes at dawn all glory be to Christ
All glory be to Christ our King all glory be to Christ
His rule and reign will ever sing all glory be to Christ
His will be done His kingdom come on earth as is above
Who is Himself our daily bread praise Him the Lord of love
Let living water satisfy the thirsty without price
We’ll take a cup of kindness yet all glory be to Christ
When on the day the great I Am the faithful and the true
The Lamb who was for sinners slain is making all things new
Behold our God shall live with us and be our steadfast light
And we shall ere his people be all glory be to Christ
Benediction and Three-Fold Amen (Hymnal, pg. 740) Danish
