Trans siblings, you are a beloved part of this world and God's creation! We are grateful for you!

On this day of visibility, we give thanks for our Transgender siblings.
For their courage, their truth-telling, their refusal to disappear.

God of Creation, give us eyes to see one another more clearly, hearts that honor each person’s belovedness, and the will to stand against harm in all its forms.

This Morning at 11am: Palms, Parades, and Peter

Palm Sunday marks the beginning of Holy Week, the final seven days before Easter. The highs are high and the lows are low for our friend Peter, who we’ve been following for the entire season of Lent. Our service will begin the dizzying joy of Palm Sunday, commemorating Jesus’ triumphant entry into Jerusalem amidst waving branches and shouts of Hosanna. Peter fades into the background, absorbed into the crowded street scene.

But not for long! The crowd’s joy to greet Jesus proves short-lived, and soon he is caught up in a world of conspiracy and betrayal. All of Peter’s unresolved tension about Jesus’ peaceful kingdom will come bubbling to the surface, with disastrous consequences.

We hope you’ll join us this Sunday as we turn the corner towards the cross and resurrection joy. We’ll see you in church.

This Sunday: “Teach Me - A Lesson In Forgiveness”

Because we are following Peter through his whole narrative arc in the Gospels, we can better appreciate the newfound humility of the man who asks gentle questions about the topic of forgiveness.

Jesus has just laid out a very practical plan for conflict resolution, including some very healthy boundaries that churches would do well to heed. And then Peter asks his question: “If a brother or sister sins against me, how many times should I forgive?” Jesus’ answer to the question manages to turn all of the practical boundaries of the previous verses on their head.

I would argue that Jesus’ teaching here is more than a tidy lesson - it is foreshadowing of Peter’s painful Good Friday experience. No doubt it will ring in Peter’s ears in the weeks ahead.

Join us in worship this Sunday at 11am for story, song, prayer, and praise! We’ll see you in church.

This Sunday: “I’m Fixed Upon It,” + We Baptize Baby Sabine!

Last week, Peter nailed it. Jesus asked his friends, “Who do you say that I am?” and Peter alone gives the correct answer: “You are the Messiah, the Son of the Living God.” In exchange for his answer, Peter receives a new name and a promise to be a pivotal leader in the emerging movement.

So forgive us for experiencing a little whiplash when, moments later, Jesus is rebuking Peter in front of all of his friends. “Get behind me, Satan,” Jesus says, after Peter denies that his Lord should suffer in the days ahead. When Jesus calls you Satan, it’s not a good day.

It’s understandable to want to brush off this painful exchange, especially in the aftermath of such a beautiful affirmation. But on Sunday, Peter’s rebuke takes center stage as we explore the relationship between saviors and suffering.

Then - we are privileged to participate in the baptism of Sabine Elise Hearren, daughter of Che Ellison and Celia Hearren. What a joy to affirm the covenant love of God for Sabine and for us all. You’re invited to stick around afterwards for a reception.

We’ll see you in church!

This Sunday: “Praise The Mount,” King Jesus, and Holy Communion

In the third week of Lent, Peter makes it onto dry land just in time for a pop quiz. Jesus is walking with his followers into Caesarea Philippi when he asks, “Who do people say that I am?” This was an easy enough question to answer! Everybody had something to say. Perhaps they weren’t expecting the second, more personal question: “Who do you say that I am?” They fell silent amidst the higher stakes. And then Peter, being Peter, blurted out an answer.

Perhaps by now we are getting familiar with this pattern of behavior: Peter acts first and thinks second. The results are a mixed bag, but Jesus seems to love his bold heart. This Sunday, we’ll ask why questions about Jesus’ identity are always personal before gathering around a common table to share the communion feast. If you are joining us virtually, feel free to bring your own bread and juice!

Note: Due to last week’s Mission Town Hall, there is no potluck following worship on March 3.

We’ll see you in church!

Tomorrow at 11am: Lent Kicks Off With A Deep Dive On Peter

For the next six weeks, we will be creating an intentional space for preparation, prayer, and reflection as we approach the mystery of Christ’s death and resurrection. This year, we are focusing that preparation on the personal experience of one person: Simon Peter of Capernaum. The Gospels devote an unusually large portion of their time to Peter, who serves as one of Jesus’ closest followers before betraying him and finally being restored to leadership.

This Sunday in worship, we’ll introduce some new music and liturgy before Tim makes the case for Peter as a window into our own tender spirits. Our homemade Lenten devotionals will be available for your personal use as well. We’ll see you in church!

Note: Session will hold it’s monthly meeting in the sanctuary following worship.
