Carrie Schofield-Broadbent was elected Bishop by the 238th Convention of the Episcopal Diocese of Maryland at St. John's, Ellicott City on March 25, 2023. She was ordained and consecrated at Washington National Cathedral September 16, 2023 and serves as Bishop Coadjutor, working with the Right Rev. Eugene Taylor Sutton. She will succeed him as XV Bishop of Maryland upon his retirement in Spring, 2024.

Sunday morning was filled with joy at Epiphany, Odenton! This wonderful group of faithful servants gathered for prayer, worship, connection, and 3 Confirmations! We enjoyed a lovely high tea after the service accompanied by rich conversations. God is on the move in this growing congregation!

It was a good morning with the good folks of St. Mathias Church of the Messiah. This parish is known for its resilience and with no air conditioning the warmth of the sanctuary as nothing compared to the warmth of this congregation. They’re faithfully and diligently working on discernment to join in where the Spirit is leading them next. I’m grateful for the steady, creative leadership of Pastor Kirstin Tannas and their vestry. Plus, look at the strong casserole game here!!

The Church has two new deacons, and the Diocese of Maryland is overjoyed!!!
Brother Christian+ will serve as vocational deacon. It was good to see him before he heads back to Kansas for medical school. Susan+ is a transitional deacon, excited to enter this new chapter of ministry.
My heart was filled by the number of deacons present! (And I know some of you were present online!).
So, Church, what do we call a gathering of deacons?
I vote for a “delight” of deacons. 😁

Yesterday filled me with hope as we celebrated the summer work of 74 Sutton Scholars. Over these past six weeks they’ve devoted themselves to learning and growing in profound and beautiful ways. These scholars are already making this world a better place. I’m so grateful for the Sutton Scholars staff, faculty, scholars, families, and supporters for this extraordinary world-changing opportunity.
We also celebrated and gave thanks for the ministry of Deacon Neva Brown+ as she enters retirement. She helped birth this program and knit this family together through love and perseverance. Thank you, Rev. Neva+!

Please join me tomorrow for Sutton Scholar’s Closing Event. The scholars will showcase their discoveries and efforts at 10am at the Weinberg Auditorium of Mercy High School.
The Closing Event is one of my favorite moments of the year because it is so clear how hard the scholars have worked, how much they have learned, and how transformative the program is in their lives. If you need a dose of hope, please join us tomorrow morning!

Grateful for the three-day inaugural Chesapeake Watershed Eco-Region retreat. We gathered from many dioceses and backgrounds with a common call, to come together to connect with God, creation, and one another in order to help our Church be repairers of how humanity’s greed has abused God’s creation. Gathering with faithful Episcopalians dedicated to restoring, honoring, and delighting in God’s creation was inspiring and hopeful. We have solid next steps for moving forward, together for good. Stay tuned!
