Appointed by the Vatican to lead the Catholic mission in the newly formed United States, Carroll became America’s first Catholic bishop in 1789 and later its first archbishop in 1810. He was also the cousin of Charles Carroll of Carrollton — the only Catholic signer of the Declaration of Independence.

His vision helped shape both Church and country. He founded Georgetown University, established St. Mary’s Seminary in Baltimore, and laid the cornerstone for what would become the Baltimore Basilica — America’s First Cathedral.

As our nation approaches its 250th anniversary, we remember Archbishop John Carroll not simply as a church leader, but as a founder whose faith and leadership helped build Catholic life in America from the ground up.

Today marks 30 years since her historic visit on May 29, 1996. During her time at America’s First Cathedral, Mother Teresa attended a special Mass where 35 Missionaries of Charity sisters renewed their religious vows in her presence.

For many in Baltimore, it was a moment they have never forgotten.

Were you there? Do you remember hearing about her visit or seeing the future Saint during her time in Baltimore? Share your memories, photos, or reflections in the comments below. 👇

Before he takes the stage at the Baltimore Basilica this weekend, Fr. Paul Maillet sat down with WBJC’s Jonathan Palevsky for a special conversation about Mozart, music, and the story behind these extraordinary performances.

Listen to the interview and get to know our featured pianist — a student of Leon Fleisher and priest whose musical journey continues to inspire.

Then experience it live:

Mozart’s Great Mass in C Minor
Piano Concerto No. 20 in D minor

A beloved Pentecost tradition at the Baltimore Basilica: red rose petals cascading from the great dome during the recessional hymn, symbolizing the descent of the Holy Spirit. 🌹🔥

How many petals do you think we used this year? Drop your guess below ⬇️

Dr. Emily Wilding spent her career as an anatomic pathologist diagnosing disease through the close study of the body's tissues. Through prayer and eucharistic devotion, she discerned a different calling – and left medicine for religious life as Sister Imelda Joy.
