The Islamic Foundation of Greater St. Louis is heartbroken and outraged by the horrific act of terror carried out at a mosque in San Diego. What should have been a place of peace, prayer, learning, and safety was transformed into the scene of unimaginable violence and tragedy.
Three innocent individuals lost their lives in this heinous attack, including a courageous security guard who made the ultimate sacrifice while protecting worshippers and the young children attending school inside the building. His bravery and selflessness will never be forgotten. We pray for the victims, their families, the injured, and an entire community now left grieving and traumatized.
For Muslims across America, this tragedy cuts deeply. Mosques are not merely buildings โ they are sanctuaries where families gather to worship, where children learn their faith and values, and where communities come together in peace. The fear that parents may now feel when dropping off their children at an Islamic school, or that worshippers may feel while attending prayer, is a painful reality no American should ever have to endure.
Law enforcement agencies have identified two juveniles who were found deceased, reportedly from self-inflicted wounds. It has also been reported that White Nationalist ideology may have influenced this attack. If true, this serves as yet another devastating reminder of the growing threat posed by hatred, extremism, racism, and violent bigotry in our society.
We are grateful to the law enforcement officers, emergency responders, and investigators working tirelessly to uncover the full truth behind this horrific crime and to protect our communities. We urge leaders at every level โ local, state, and national โ to confront the rise of extremist rhetoric and ideologies with seriousness and urgency before more innocent lives are lost.
Islamophobia cannot continue to be minimized or ignored. For years, Muslims in America have faced increasing hostility, threats, harassment, vandalism, and violence fueled by misinformation, fearmongering, and reckless rhetoric. Dangerous narratives portraying Islam or โShariah Lawโ as a threat to America are false, irresponsible, and contrary to the very constitutional values of religious freedom and pluralism that define this nation. Such rhetoric does not remain confined to television screens, political speeches, or online forums โ it has real-world consequences that endanger innocent lives.
America is strongest when it stands united against hatred in all forms. Places of worship โ whether mosques, churches, synagogues, temples, or schools โ must remain sacred spaces of peace and safety for every citizen, regardless of faith or background.
Now more than ever, our nation must choose unity over division, compassion over hatred, and truth over fear. It is the collective responsibility of our leaders, institutions, faith communities, and neighbors to educate, speak out against extremism, and stand together against the forces seeking to divide us.
We pray for healing, justice, and peace for the victims, their loved ones, and the broader San Diego Muslim community during this painful time.
