The final 2 weeks of our 11-week study on Jesus' farewell discourse focused on the astounding prayer of Jesus recorded across the entirety of John 17. We concluded this study by praying our own prayer that echoes the core themes of Jesus' prayer. You can find the prayer below--one that could be offered by any disciple, at any time, in any circumstance.
----------
"Our Father in heaven,
Holy is your name.
We come to You through Your Son and our Lord Jesus, and by the Holy Spirit, our Advocate. We are grateful that we are not guessing how to pray, because we have heard our Savior pray.
We ask for what He asked: make us one.
Give us a real sense of unity shaped by truth and our common bond of love.
Remove pride, rivalry, suspicion, and any other obstacles to unity among us.
Teach us to bear with one another, in love.
Let the world see in our love and unity, a reflection of the love and unity You have shared eternally with Your Son.
Father, we also ask to deepen our life with You.
Teach us to depend on You in all the days of our lives, not only in crisis.
Let Your word live in us and shape our daily desires.
Help us to know You--not merely to know about You--and for your joy to be fulfilled in us.
You have left us here in the world, though we are not of it.
You created us, the world around us, and all who are in it.
Give us courage, patience, and hope.
Keep us from being shaped by fear, anger, despair, or hatred.
When trials come, hold us fast, and keep us.
Make us faithful witnesses in a world that often does not yet understand your love.
Guard us also from the evil one, and his varied temptations.
Guard our minds from lies and deceit, our hearts from bitterness, and our lives from hidden sin.
Sanctify us in Your truth; Your word is truth.
Make us holy people, set apart for You in thought, word, and deed.
Finally, Father, as You sent Your Son into the world, now send us.
Open doors for Your love, unity, and compassion to be seen through us.
Give us eyes to notice those who are searching and seeking after You.
Give us boldness to speak of Jesus and his gospel with humility, passion, and sincerity.
Let us be and make disciples in our families, in our community, and in our world.
May Christ be known in and through us.
We do not ask any of these things by our own wisdom,
but because Your Son prayed for people like us,
and because You delight to answer the prayers He taught us to pray.
Keep us, Father, as we seek to keep ourselves in Your love.
Keep us until the day we see Your glory, in full.
And all of God's people, said,
Amen."
