Money and Idolatry

Can wealth become a barrier between you and God? Jesus' words in Mark 10:25 are some of the most challenging in all of Scripture: "It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to enter the Kingdom of God." What did He mean, and what does that mean for us today?

"Break Chains" is a sermon from James 5:1-6, which confronts the sobering reality that money is more than a financial tool—it can become an object of trust and ultimately an idol. While wealth itself is not sinful, our dependence upon it can quietly replace our dependence upon God.

This sermon explores why Jesus' warning has no qualifiers and why it applies to every believer who possesses wealth. Rather than comparing ourselves to those who have more, we are challenged to examine where our security truly lies. Do we trust our savings, retirement accounts, and financial stability more than we trust the Lord?

Ultimately, "Breaking Chains" is a call to examine where our confidence truly rests. The gospel reminds us that while wealth can become a powerful chain that binds our hearts, Jesus Christ is able to break every chain. When we stop trusting in our riches and place our faith completely in Him, we discover the freedom, security, and eternal hope that money could never provide.

What kind of people should lead a community? Is leadership primarily about policies, promises, experience, or something even more foundational? In this sermon, People of Grit, we examine James 3:1–18 alongside the biblical qualifications for elders found in 1 Timothy 3 and Titus 1 to discover that God consistently places the highest value on character.

While many people think of elders simply as church leaders or pastors, Scripture presents a much broader picture. In both the Old Testament and the early church, elders served as trusted leaders within their communities. They helped settle disputes, promoted justice, cared for the vulnerable, and provided wise leadership rooted in integrity. Their effectiveness was measured not primarily by their skills or positions, but by the kind of people they were.

Although the Bible does not provide direct instructions for participating in a modern democratic election, it does reveal timeless principles about selecting those who exercise authority. Throughout Scripture, God emphasizes that those entrusted with leadership should first demonstrate lives marked by righteousness, humility, self-control, and proven moral character. Before asking what a leader promises to do, believers should ask what kind of person that leader has consistently shown themselves to be.

If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.

Jesus said, “It is finished” (John 19:30).
In that moment, He completed the work of redemption—taking our place and bearing the punishment for our sin so that we could receive forgiveness and eternal life through Him. ❣️

Pastor Aaron shared this powerful truth with four local churches as we gathered for the Lenten Luncheon, held each Wednesday at 12:30 PM at First Baptist Church in Ballston Spa leading up until Easter.
