May 28 Weekly Note,

It’s been a while since I read the book of Jonah, but a couple things struck me about the opening verses in the bible…note the direction words!

Now the word of the Lord came to Jonah the son of Amittai, saying, 2 “Arise, go
to Nineveh, that great city, and call out against it, for their evil has come up before
me.” 3 But Jonah rose to flee to Tarshish from the presence of the Lord. He went down to Joppa and found a ship going to Tarshish. So he paid the fare and went down into it, to go with them to Tarshish, away from the presence of the Lord.

4 But the Lord hurled a great wind upon the sea, and there was a mighty tempest on the sea, so that the ship threatened to break up. 5 Then the mariners were afraid, and each cried out to his god. And they hurled the cargo that was in the ship into the sea to lighten it for them. But Jonah had gone down into the inner part of the ship and had lain down and was fast asleep. 6 So the captain came and said to him, “What do you mean, you sleeper? Arise, call out to your god! Perhaps the god will give a thought to us, that we may not perish.”

– Jonah 1:1-6

When Jonah ran from the Lord he went down to Joppa, down into the ship, down into the inner part of the ship…and if that wasn’t enough Jonah had lain down and fallen asleep. I’m guessing it was probably a “deep” sleep!

Sometimes I feel the prompting of the Lord to do something that I really don’t want to do. And, like Jonah, when I go my own way it isn’t long before I find myself drowning on my own.

But like Jonah, we can call out to God and He is faithful:

5 The waters closed in over me to take my life; the deep surrounded me; weeds were wrapped about my head. 6 To the roots of the mountains I went down, to the land whose bars closed upon me forever. Yet you brought up my life from the pit, O Lord my God.

- Jonah 2:5-6

Thank you God for being the God of resurrections – the God who redeems our life from the pit and who returns us to the solid rock of Jesus!

Regards,

Ken

Close your eyes, sit up straight, and think of your belly as a balloon you’re trying to inflate. Breathe in through your nose counting silently to four. Now slowly breathe out through your nose, silently counting to four.

Continue these breaths while thinking about a place that makes you feel happy, safe, and peaceful. This can be a place you have been, or a place that you create in your imagination.

💡Taking deep breaths can help us to feel calm and have clear minds. How do you feel?

Weekly Note,
46 And day by day, attending the temple together and breaking bread in their homes, they received their food with glad and generous hearts, 47 praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to their number day by day those who were being saved. – Acts 2:46 (ESV)

As I’m preparing for Sunday and the celebration of Pentecost – the giving of the Holy Spirit – I was struck by these verses at the end of our scripture (Acts 2).I love this view of the early church:

- Up – attending the temple together….praising God

- In – breaking bread in their homes, they received their food with glad and generous hearts

- Out – and having favor with all the people.

Last Sunday we talked about the ways that God speaks to and through his people…and then we put this in action by collecting ideas from God’s people on how we – individually and collectively – can better fulfill our mission for 2026:

- Up - Becoming a church that prays

- In - Ensuring no one does life alone

- Out - Being more visible and approachable to the world around us

We collected over 100 ideas and 140 votes on those ideas. As I read through them, I was overwhelmed by the creativity and excitement of doing more than just talking about God and our relationships Up, In, and Out – how we can engage and DO this life together.

- Pray for the leadership team as we talk through these ideas and organize them into
action.

- Look at the ideas again on Sunday – they’ve been grouped and organized

- Pray over the ideas and how you can engage in them to grow closer to God, closer to

his people, and engage the world around us in the name of Jesus.

Ken

Weekly Note,
10 Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might. 11 Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil. 12 For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places. 13 Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm. 14 Stand therefore, having fastened on the belt of truth, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness, 15 and, as shoes for your feet, having put on the readiness given by the gospel of peace. 16 In all circumstances take up the shield of

faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming darts of the evil one; 17 and take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God, 18 praying at all times in the Spirit, with all prayer and supplication. – Ephesians 6:10-18

The advice Paul gives in Ephesians to put on the whole armor of God is a beautiful metaphor. We prepare for spiritual battle because, in the end, that is exactly what we’re in – war. Not a war with bombs, drones, or rifles – or even actual swords, but a war none the less. There are people around us who desperately need to know the love of Christ and the freedom from the bo***ge of their slavery to sin.

We armor ourselves with salvation, truth, righteousness, peace, and faith. With these things we protect our own hearts because, let’s face it, when we try to love other people, we are bound to get hurt in the process! But knowing our salvation is secure, having Jesus’ peace – his Shalom, protecting our heats with right intentions, and having our armor secured in the truth of scripture protects us as we use the word of god, “praying at all times in the Spirit, with all prayer and supplication – all of this is not only preparation for the battle, it IS the battle.

I look forward to taking our cares and our mission to God and seeking his direction for our lives and our church! 🤍 🙏🏼 ⛪️
Regards,

Ken

Pastors Weekly Message 📖

May 7, 2026
This Sunday, we’ll be reading through the Great Commission as part of our series studying the events of Eastertide – the time between Easter and Pentecost. As always, there is so much more I’d like to share in the sermons than we have time to cover! God’s word is so rich and new, and the Holy Spirit works in us to see the same words in new light…but that’s a whole different sermon!

The “sending” part of the Great Commission is typically what gets the most focus, but before we get there this Sunday, I’d like to take a closer look at the verses that lead into the Great Commission. These first verses do more than just set the scene:

16 Now the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain to which Jesus had directed them. 17 And when they saw him, they worshiped him, but some doubted. – Matthew 28:16-17

The disciples didn’t just happen to be on a random mountain in Galilee – they went there, where Jesus told them to be in obedience to His directions.

Obedience – that’s a dirty word in today’s society, isn’t it?

Obedience -especially in America where we bow to no one. We didn’t like the taxes on the tea so we tossed it in the harbor. This year we’ll celebrate 250 years since telling King George that it was our right – our duty – to fight against tyranny. We’re Americans – we’re rebels at heart…

But as Christians, we do bow to THE King. We serve in His Kingdom. And we Obey His

directions.

We obey because he’s the Almighty, but not out of unhealthy fear. That being said – I, for one, don’t want to spend 3 days in the belly of a fish if I refuse the call to preach!

But while that may be true, it is not the primary motivator. We obey because we know God loves us, that He wants our best for us, and we obey because He knows all things and, knowing all things, He has given us directions to live, not to oppress us or keep us from finding fulfillment, but because in obedience to him is exactly where we will find fulfillment.

Now the second “lead in” verse:

17 And when they saw Him, they worshiped Him, but some doubted. – Matthew 28:17

They knew Jesus was God. They knew He was dead…dead-dead…three days in the tomb dead…They knew that He’d risen from the grave – they’d put their fingers in His nail prints, their hands in the hole in His side. They’d eaten with Him, talked with Him, and been taught by Him.

They even worshipped him, and while worshiping, “but some doubted.”

Now my first inclination is to criticize the disciples for their lack of faith. If only I’d seen signs like that, surely, I wouldn’t have doubted…

But I know myself too well…

We all have moments of doubt. Even those who have had miraculous events in their lives doubt.

But it was to these disciples and their fickle, doubting hearts that Jesus gave the great commission. It was to those doubters, and to us doubters, that Jesus gave the great commission to “Go”.

Doubt does not excuse us from obedience…On Sunday, we’ll look at how God – throughout the bible – used people with doubts, fears, and tragic character flaws in ways that changed the world forever.

See you Sunday,

Ken
