Isaiah 40:31 …but those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.

Today we take a look at a verse that many know and love. It takes us into the book of Isaiah where we find a message of hope that was written to the Israelites who had been exiled to Babylon. These people felt like all hope was lost, having been captives in a foreign land for decades. And it is in this context that Isaiah’s message of hope is given.

Maybe you find yourself in a dark and lonely place devoid of hope. But it is never as bad as you think it may be, especially when your hope is placed in the Lord. Isaiah reassured the people that if they placed their trust in God, that He would help them endure and even overcome.

In Hebrew, the word qavah is translated as hope or waiting on the Lord. It indicates exercising active, hopeful expectation, endurance, and trust in God's timing, rather than being passively idle. It is that hope, that act of waiting on the Lord that we need today when facing times of struggle or darkness. In that moment of faith, we are able to renew our strength, too, just as Isaiah’s message indicated to the Israelites.

Eagles are majestic creatures who soar through the air and float on air currents. Why did Isaiah choose eagles to describe the trust we should have in the Lord? Eagles soar by riding rising air currents, which allows them to fly for hours with minimal wing flapping. Their specialized wing feathers separate like slotted wingtips to create maximum lift and reduce drag, helping them conserve energy to hunt and travel.

Like the eagles, we, too, can soar. We can find renewal. We can have endurance while waiting on Him, running but not growing weary. We can walk through whatever challenges life gives us without growing faint.

That is the hope we can have in God to help us get through things that seem impossible to bear, things that are dragging us down and discouraging us. We can be like the eagle soaring. We, too, can have our strength renewed. The Lord is near to the brokenhearted, near to the weary. And in many cases, the Lord carries us when we cannot place a foot in front of the other.

Today let’s turn to God instead of letting circumstances dictate our faith or becoming discouraged. Turn to Him and trust that like the eagle soaring, He will be with us and lift us higher. Soar, friends, and trust in Him to be the updrafts of air that lift you higher.

Psalm 51:10 Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me.

We start this month focusing on renewal and restoration with a verse that is among my favorites. When I was in college we sang a song based upon this psalm and it brings back memories of days long past for me. And perhaps you, too, have stories or memories relating back to this verse.

This psalm came after David was confronted by the prophet Nathan about the affair with Bathsheba and the murder of her husband Uriah. David, having been confronted, was left to face his moral failures. In that moment he cried out desperately to God for total renewal. He recognized his failures and the grave sins he had committed. He realized that he couldn’t just apologize and everything would go back to normal. He needed a total renewal of his heart. And so he cried out to God in his desperation.

It is a very interesting choice of words that David used in his pleas to God. He chose to use the Hebrew word bara. In English, we see it translated as create but in Hebrew there is a much deeper meaning. Bara is used to explain how something entirely new comes from nothing. He realized that his heart was severely damaged by his sins and beyond repair. He knew it would take God doing something - creating a new heart - for him to be renewed.

He also used a word for clean or pure that implied a total lack of contamination. He wanted to erase the past, to scrub away the contamination of his sins.

From there, he asked God to renew a steadfast spirit within him. He was asking for the stability to stay faithful, he did not want to be disobedient in any way and asked God to renew a spirit within him that would help him stay strong and faithful.

This month we will be spending all our time seeking God and learning how He renews and restores us. Begin today by asking God to renew your heart and create a steadfast spirit in you. And know that He has heard you and is a faithful Father who wants what’s best for you.

Here is the June Scripture Writing Plan. The goal is to write one verse per day. This can be done in a blank notebook, a journal, or in a monthly planner. Don’t just write the verse and then move on to something more. Spend time thinking about the verse, pray over it, and consider what it means to you.

Romans 14:10 You, then, why do you judge your brother or sister? Or why do you treat them with contempt? For we will all stand before God’s judgment seat.

The context from which today’s verse was taken was over disputes within the Church regarding things that divided the members. They had differing convictions and it divided them into two overall groups that considered themselves strong versus weak.

The weak in faith had strong conviction over their views of meat previously sacrificed to idols and they maintained strict dietary restrictions and held specific holy days. The strong in faith understood that in Christ, these strict dietary laws were no longer necessary

The weak looked at the strong and judged them as sinners. The strong looked at the week and treated them with contempt. And all of this caused division in the body and disrupted fellowship and worship. Paul reminded them all that they were not to be judging others, especially not their fellow brethren. It was inappropriate for them to do this because they were usurping the role of Christ when doing so.

Christ alone is the ultimate judge. Human judgment of fellow believers should not take place today any more than it was allowed then. Paul’s reminder was that judging someone else’s personal convictions was them trying to take over the role that belongs exclusively to God.

As believers we all need to remember that each one of us will stand before God for judgement. None of us will escape Judgement Day so remember that before passing any type of judgement on others.

Matthew 7:2 For in the same way you judge others, you will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.

Matthew 7:2 is part of the concluding section of the Sermon on the Mount. In Matthew 7:1, Jesus told the listeners not to judge others. This then leads into the next verse, which we will explore a bit more in depth today.

We are told that in the same way we judge others, we are judged. Whether that is literal or more figurative, I am not certain, but regardless the message is clearly not to pass judgement on others. The verse is a warning against hypocritical attitudes and condemnation. In verse 7 in the original Greek, the word used is krino. We have learned this word in previous devotions this month but to refresh our memories the direct translation means to condemn, treat with contempt, or act as the ultimate judge over someone's soul.

Why do we think we have any right to judge others? Just because we are Christians it doesn’t mean we are better than others or have a higher station in life. We are sinners just as much as they are and we make just as many mistakes. We should not put ourselves in God's place in declaring people righteous or unrighteous because we are not qualified to make that determination. We cannot see their heart or know the depth of their sins.

We must remember not to determine something unfair or inappropriate because God has not given us any authority to do so. Those who pass judgment on others try to put themselves in a position they shouldn’t because they try to take God's place of judgment over His people and that is wrong.

I don’t know about you but I don’t want to have God judge me in any way. Just like anyone, I have found myself passing judgement on someone without knowing the whole story or seeing all of the details. And I don’t want Him to judge me in the same manner I have judged others.

It is a humbling thought to know that the same manner in which we have passed judgement on others is what God says He will use to judge us. We need to learn to practice self-reflection and prioritize the giving of grace to others rather than doling out correction or judgement. We have been given grace upon grace and we need to be generous in giving grace to others.
