Jim and Elizabeth Elliot met in college, fell in love, and dated for years before marrying, willing to walk away from each other if loving one another ever got in the way of what God had called them to do. That’s how much they wanted Jesus more than anything else.

They got married and went to Ecuador, and for years, they poured themselves into reaching an isolated tribal people for the gospel. They dropped gifts, and did whatever they could to build trust with these people.
In January 1956, Jim and four other missionaries finally made contact. That contact cost them their lives, and all five of them were killed by the tribe. Jim left behind Elizabeth and their one-year-old daughter, Valerie. Jim and Elisabeth knew that this could be the price of sharing Jesus with these people, but he went regardless, confident in his calling, willing to sacrifice it all.

The story doesn’t end there. Two years later, on what would’ve been Jim’s birthday, Elizabeth moved into that same village with her daughter. She lived among the very people who killed her husband, learned their language, and helped translate the New Testament. Even some of the men responsible for Jim’s death came to faith in Jesus.

Elizabeth said it best: “To be a follower of the crucified means sooner or later a personal encounter with the cross.”

The Elliots gave everything they had for the sake of Christ. What is Jesus asking you to lay down today?

We are grieving with our community following last night’s shooting at Independence High School. Church, pray for our city. Pray for comfort for those who lost their loved one, for peace for the students, staff and faculty who were impacted, and for courage for those investigating the shooting and protecting our community. In dark times, we depend on and turn to the Lord for our comfort and strength, so let’s lift up our city together.

Psalm 46:1-3
God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear though the earth give way, though the mountains be moved into the heart of the sea,though its waters roar and foam, though the mountains tremble at its swelling.
