Holy Thursday (also known as Maundy Thursday) marks the beginning of the Paschal Triduum, the three holiest days of the liturgical year in the Catholic tradition.
It celebrates the "three pillars" of the faith established by Jesus at the Last Supper: the Sacrament of the Holy Eucharist, the institution of the Priesthood, and the commandment of love.
Key Liturgical Events :
The day features unique rituals that set it apart from ordinary celebrations:
Chrism Mass: Usually held on Thursday morning at the local Cathedral, where the Bishop blesses the three holy oils (Chrism, Oil of the Sick, and Oil of Catechumens) to be used for sacraments throughout the year across the diocese. During this Mass, priests also publicly renew their ordination promises.
Evening Mass of the Lord’s Supper: This is the primary liturgy of the day, held after sundown to commemorate the Last Supper.
The Mandatum (Washing of the Feet): Following the homily, the priest washes the feet of selected parishioners, imitating Jesus’ act of humility and service toward his disciples.
Silencing of Bells: Church bells are rung during the Gloria, then remain silent—often replaced by a wooden clapper or crotalus—until the Easter Vigil as a sign of mourning and solemnity.
Transfer of the Most Blessed Sacrament: After Mass, the Eucharist is carried in a solemn procession to a temporary Altar of Repose.
Stripping of the Altar: The main altar is stripped bare of all cloths and decorations, symbolizing the abandonment and humiliation of Jesus during his arrest.
Popular Traditions & Devotions :
Seven Churches Visitation (Visita Iglesia): Many Catholics visit seven different churches on Thursday night to pray before their respective Altars of Repose. This pilgrimage reflects the seven "stations" or stops Jesus made between the Last Supper and his crucifixion.
Eucharistic Adoration: The faithful are encouraged to stay in silent prayer and adoration with Jesus at the Altar of Repose until midnight, recalling his agony in the Garden of Gethsemane.
Clean Thursday: In various cultures, it is traditional to perform a "spring cleaning" of the home or body in preparation for the Easter festivities.
