I'm excited to let you know that Rowden Baptist's gift during Abilene Gives got something started. It was shared with a couple of friends and they jumped on board. Together the matching challenge got up to $3,500.00! It was called the Mekong Match!

Chosen Devotional: Rise
Mark 2:1-5

What a wild scene. There was such a mob at the house that latecomers couldn’t get in. People surrounded Jesus while He preached and healed, but they were interrupted by sounds above. And then, chunks of roof fell. Jesus was moved by the faith that drove them to such heights (cheesy pun), and He forgave the paralytic.

Wait – wait! Um thanks. Jesus, but when we decided to scale the walls of tis house, we were hoping for a real miracle…something along the lines of “rise and walk.”

At least that’s how it usually works. We go to Jesus with our own ideas about what He should do for us, and we’re disappointed when He doesn’t stick to the script. But it’s often in the unexpected that Jesus does His best work.

Read Mark 2:6-12. Who can forgive sins but God alone? Jesus, perceived in His spirit that they questioned within themselves.

Christ’s mission was to save souls, and healing was useful in demonstrating His power to do that. But it wasn’t the mission. Healing displayed His compassion, love, and desire to restore, but it paled in comparison to His true purpose: to rescue and raise lost souls. Of course, Jesus was able to discern the genuine faith of the men on the roof, along with the lack of faith of the crowed in the room. He exposed their thoughts – also a miracle – and announced His power to both heal and forgive. Since forgiveness is necessary to have a restored relationship with God and thus spend eternity with Him, Jesus was offering something far better than healing.

“So that you may know I have the power to forgive, rise and walk.” Of course he did rise and walk, and this time probably through the front door.

Thank God for forgiving your sins!

Dear Knee-Benders,
Summer is almost here! The weather has turned hot; the kids are counting down the days left until the end of the school year; activities are winding down; and we are all ready for a break from what has been a very full spring.
Between now and then, though, our Majority friends will be celebrating Eid al-Adha, the Festival of Sacrifice. The festival is predicted to start Wednesday, May 27, depending on the sighting of the moon. This is the biggest of the two festivals in the Isl@m!c calendar and commemorates when Abraham was willing to sacrifice his son, Ishmael, by their tradition. This festival also marks the end of the hajj—the annual trip to Mecca that they are required to make at least once in their lifetime, if physically and financially able.

Families will spend large amounts of money to purchase sheep, goats or cows to sacrifice on the first morning of the 3-day festival. Some view this sacrifice as a means of their s!ns being taken away. The family will retain a third of the meat, give a third to relatives and friends, and give the final third to the poor.

As we and our brothers and sisters have opportunities to visit with friends and neighbors over the next week, ask that hearts would be open to hearing about the One sacrifice that is needed and that has already been made for each of us. Many families are struggling to make ends meet as it is. The requirements and expectations of this festival (including new clothes and gifts to be given, particularly to children) put an extra heavy strain on families. Ask that many would recognize and acknowledge the One who is their Provider, just as Abraham himself experienced (Gen. 22:14).

PRAY FOR NAME

In Matthew 13, Jesus likened the Kingdom of Heaven to a woman who put a little leaven into three measures of flour, and it permeated every part of the dough. In the cities of Northern Africa and the Middle East, every culture, religion, race, language, and economic group merge. Although many people seek satisfaction in earthly things while living in these global cities, many others search for answers to bigger questions. Believers are praying that when those traveling, living, working or studying abroad return home, they will take the message of the gospel with them.
Pray that God will place truth, like leaven, in every neighborhood and business of these cities...that each community will be saturated with Christ-loving disciples, and that these sojourners will take his love and salvation back home.

PRAY FOR NAME

In many parts of NAME, the newly translated Word of God is being read and recorded by trained, local Christians verse-by-verse. Local church leaders benefit from these recordings. And as they are trained, they, in turn, teach others. This oral Word is being distributed using SD cards, giving people in low literacy society the ability to hear God’s Word in their own language. Many of these people are hearing for the first time.
Praise God that his Word is being made accessible in these areas. Ask God to anoint the teams and their work. Pray that He will bring many to believe and grow in faith.

Billy Graham shared about a visit with a young soldier paralyzed from a blast while serving in Korea. He said, “It was worth it if America is free!”

Around Memorial Day, people say: “Freedom isn’t free” as we honor those who have sacrificed their lives for our country. From the Revolutionary War, approximately 1,354,664 Americans have given their lives in service to our country. That’s a staggering number.

This Memorial Day, let’s be thankful for those who made the ultimate sacrifice. praying for their loved ones. Never forget and always appreciate their courage

Thank God for the men and women who fought for freedom and paid the price. Ask for comfort and strength for their families and friends.
