“Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.” – Matt. 5:5 (ESV)

I feel this verse has been misunderstood for too long. Certainly this is due to an false understanding of what meekness actually is. There is a difference between the dictionary definition and the Biblical definition. In the dictionary definition we see Marriam-Webster define meek as mild, submissive, and not violent or strong. To the world meekness is equated with weakness. This is not what Jesus was talking about.

The Biblical definition of meekness power under authority. The Greek word “praus” was used for a wild stallion which has been broken and trained for battle. It means restraining our own rights or anger for the good of others. Trusting God rather than lashing out or taking matters into our own hands. Jordan Peterson described meekness as having a sword, but the discipline to have it sheathed.

Moses was described as the meekest man on Earth (Num. 12:3). But any surface level of Moses even shows that he was not timid but entirely surrendered to God. Matthew 11:29 describes Jesus as “meek and lowly in heart”, but he was not timid speaking the Word of God nor showing righteous anger to temple moneychangers. Jesus’ words in the Sermon on the Mount in this verse were words written by King David, a man of war but after God’s own heart.

The Church has never been called to weakness, but this biblical type of meekness. We are called to turn the world upside down, not cower at the thought of what the world can do. Paul stood ready to face anything to spread the Gospel. Our 21st century church is called to the same power as the 1st century church. Trained for battle against the enemy and trusting God. This is why we sing, Onward Christian Soldiers!!!!

Daily Groundings – With Pastor Darrin

“We who are strong have an obligation to bear with the failings of the weak, and not to please ourselves. Let each of us please his neighbor for his good, to build him up.” – Romans 15: 1 – 2 (ESV)

The fancy word for this is edification. It also can be called to prophesy to another. The important idea is that as we grow in faith and knowledge, we are not called to keep it to ourselves. We are called to lift others up. When our faith has grown, when we have exercised our faith to be stronger, we are to build up those who are still growing. Help them to use the measure of faith they have been given, to grow by adding our faith in agreement.
We can please our neighbor when we do such, because it brings their faith up. Many times I have heard the joy in a person when they receive from the Lord after having someone agree in prayer with them. The expectation when they know a person who sees prayers answered, pray with them. Or simply share how to actually pray.
This is a ministry all can share in. As we grow in faith, share what the Holy Spirit has given to you. Share what it means to have faith. Pray in agreement with someone. This is not only building up our neighbor, it is Kingdom building. So let’s get to building!

Daily Groundings – With Pastor Darrin Vail

But He gives us more and more grace [through the power of the Holy Spirit to defy sin and live an obedient life that reflects both our faith and our gratitude for our salvation]. Therefore, it says, “GOD IS OPPOSED TO THE PROUD and HAUGHTY, BUT [continually] GIVES [the gift of] GRACE TO THE HUMBLE [who turn away from self-righteousness].” - James 4:6 (AMP)

Pride is a deadly root of all sinful actions. It is actually the is what caused Lucifer, the most beautiful of God’s angels, the worship leader, one of the three archangels, to fall. Scripture tells us when he saw his beauty, pride entered and he decided to raise his throne above the creator. Later he tempts Eve with the same pride, “you will be like God…” Satan then tempts Jesus with the same, “If you are the Son of God…”

It’s no wonder God is opposed to the proud. Pride is never something to be celebrated. When I hear ideas like Pride Month, I can only think about the opposition to God. Too many humans fall to the idea of pride. Not just one group of people. The thief believes his need for money is greater than yours. The lustful believes their pleasure is more important then God’s design of intimacy only in marriage. The Pharisee boasts about his works for God, rather than the Glory of God.

The key to walking in holiness is to suppress pride. What the Bible refers to as putting down the flesh. This is why Paul would start his letters saying he is a slave (bondservant) to Christ. We shouldn’t go about reminding everyone of the old dead man, that says the Cross wasn’t enough to change us. We just need to remember we chose to live in the reality, Jesus is Lord! Not government, not our situation, and certainly not us. Christ is King, and I have pride that He saved me.

Daily Groundings: Pastor Darrin’s Devotional

“Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the inheritance as your reward. You are serving the Lord Christ.”
Colossians 3:23 – 24

We are to be a blessing at all times to those who are over us, or in the case of a business owner, your customers. A believer should be the best employee in any place which they work, because we are not serving money, we serve Jesus. This should be fruit that is seen in our workplace. The fruit of the Spirit is not just for the edification of the church but should be evident in everything we do.
As a Christian we are called to be a people who reflect the love of God. This even extends to our workplace. First, we must remind ourselves that our ability to work was given to us by God. We should be thankful for the means to care for our families and selves. God also provides us a way to not just care for our needs, but to be a blessing on others. Tithes to the local church, Offerings to a ministry or organization are still us blessing others.
We are to also freely give to the work of our Lord. Proverbs 12:2 says, “A generous person will prosper; whoever refreshes others will be refreshed.” Just like Abraham, we are blessed to be a blessing. And we are equipped to be a blessing through our work. Deut. 28: 12 (ESV) says “The LORD will open to you his good treasury, the heavens, to give the rain to your land in its season and to bless all the work of your hands”.
Working for the Lord means we have joy, love, and a good report. We are blessed not only to take care of our needs, but to give the tithe and offering for the furtherance of the Gospel. And praying at all times. When you send out that order, bless it with your words. Before anything we do, bless it. We are working for the Lord, blessing someone always.

"God arms me with strength, and he makes my way perfect"
Psalms 18:32 (NLT)

There is no way that I can do anything perfect. I'm the type that somehow has screws and nuts left over after putting together anything. A dear friend of mine who has gone on to glory once said that God made us perfectly imperfect, so we may always rely on him. It is in our imperfection that we realize our need for a savior.
Jesus was the only perfect human to ever walk the face of the earth. Fully God, and fully man who relied on the Holy Spirit. This is our example, relying on the Holy Spirit to be our guide, comforter and teacher.
It is only with the Holy Spirit that we can come close to the perfection which is God's standard. But even in our imperfection, there is good news. God doesn't do partial victory! When we are washed in the Blood of the Lamb, we are perfectly clean. When God sets us apart, we are perfectly sanctified. When God does a work, he doesn't approve partial victory.
When Jesus said He has the keys to Hell and the grave, there is no partial victory over death. There is not purgatory, no limbo, no delay. When the believer finishes this life, it is to be immediately in the presence of the Lord.
When God gives victory, it's not bronze or silver. It's pure gold. Victory in Jesus!
