“Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.” – Matt. 5:5 (ESV)
I feel this verse has been misunderstood for too long. Certainly this is due to an false understanding of what meekness actually is. There is a difference between the dictionary definition and the Biblical definition. In the dictionary definition we see Marriam-Webster define meek as mild, submissive, and not violent or strong. To the world meekness is equated with weakness. This is not what Jesus was talking about.
The Biblical definition of meekness power under authority. The Greek word “praus” was used for a wild stallion which has been broken and trained for battle. It means restraining our own rights or anger for the good of others. Trusting God rather than lashing out or taking matters into our own hands. Jordan Peterson described meekness as having a sword, but the discipline to have it sheathed.
Moses was described as the meekest man on Earth (Num. 12:3). But any surface level of Moses even shows that he was not timid but entirely surrendered to God. Matthew 11:29 describes Jesus as “meek and lowly in heart”, but he was not timid speaking the Word of God nor showing righteous anger to temple moneychangers. Jesus’ words in the Sermon on the Mount in this verse were words written by King David, a man of war but after God’s own heart.
The Church has never been called to weakness, but this biblical type of meekness. We are called to turn the world upside down, not cower at the thought of what the world can do. Paul stood ready to face anything to spread the Gospel. Our 21st century church is called to the same power as the 1st century church. Trained for battle against the enemy and trusting God. This is why we sing, Onward Christian Soldiers!!!!
