In September of 1977, Ted & Barbara Platt and Lew & Sandy Shaffer co-founded Son Shine Ministries in Montgomery, Alabama.
Four years later, after both Ted and Lew had retired from the U.S. Air Force, they made the move to the DFW area, soon finding a 22-acre plot of land near Azle, Texas, where Son Shine Ministries has called home ever since.
Founded with a love for Jesus and a heart for families, this small parachurch ministry has shared the Gospel and biblical teachings on marriage and family in our own hometown, the DFW metro area, throughout Texas, across the U.S., and even throughout the world.
Two of our founders—Lew Shaffer and Barbara Platt—have passed on to be with the Lord, and we miss them dearly. Sandy Shaffer lives on the ministry property and is doing well, and Ted Platt lives in Montgomery close to his son & daughter-in-law and other relatives and is also doing well.
On September 3, we recognized Founders’ Day, and we praise God for the four special people who founded Son Shine Ministries in response to a calling from the Lord.
Forty-six years later, Son Shine Ministries continues to share the life-changing message of Jesus Christ and equip families to serve him effectively. Our methodology has shifted from weekend events to process-based ministry (a series of meetings as opposed to one big weekend event), but our focus on Jesus and the use of God’s Word remains a constant.
We celebrate our history today, and we also look forward to all that lies ahead!
