Epworth Methodist Church News Letter

“The Global Methodist Church exists to make disciples of Jesus Christ and spread scriptural holiness across the globe.” Book of Doctrine and Discipline

SUNDAY, AUGUST 09, 2026

Hello everyone. I hope you are getting some useful information from our newsletter. If you would, send me an email or text with any comments, including what else you would like in the Newsletter. This is meant to be read and meant to be passed on.

In todays “Ed's Thoughts & Commentary”, Todays Sunday School Lesson was “Family – A Valuable Lesson.” The Primary Christian Value of our Church is WE ARE FAMILY.

PASTOR’S Minute

Pastor Tera’s sermon was “Multiplying God’s Family / Being Disciples”. That is who we are in the Global Methodist Church. “The Global Methodist Church exists to make disciples of Jesus Christ and spread scriptural holiness across the globe.”
I have posted our YouTube church service earlier today and I will post it again here. https://youtu.be/MGB5eIjgT0Y?feature=shared Every one of us, members or not, should listen to Pastor’s words again. You will be moved and impressed.

Pastor’s Adult Sunday School “Christian to the Core” is worth the stay after church. It is not a Bible Study, but a study of our life. The subject today was “Family – A Valuable Lesson.” The most important lessons we learn in life are learned through our families, and the most important lessons that we teach in life are to our children. That was just the 1st sentence. The discussion based on that sentence was priceless. Some of my thoughts are in my commentary at the end of this newsletter. Stay for this Adult Sunday School, it would be well worth your time, even if you just sat in the back and listen.

A Message from Pastor Tera
The Global Methodist Church's General Conference in Johannesburg, South Africa is coming quickly! The Lord has blessed me with being selected as a volunteer assistant to the Conference Secretary to help with the committees as they prepare legislation for vote by the delegates. I am so excited, but I need your help!

1) Please be in prayer for me and for the delegation from Virginia who will be traveling to represent our churches here in the Virginia Conference to the global body of the GMC. Conference runs from August 29-September 5th, which means folks will begin traveling on August 26th and returning home between the 6th and the 7th. Please cover the preparation, the travel, and the work while we are there with prayers for God's amazing power and presence to move in and among us.

2) As a volunteer, travel and lodging expenses are my responsibility. I am trusting the Lord to provide for this need, and hope you may be willing to be part of that provision. If you would like to donate toward this important work, please go to:

https://gmcvirginia.churchcenter.com/giving/to/tera-ertz-gc-2026

Or DM to mail a check. Thank you all for your prayers and support!

NOTE FROM ME: I am very proud that Pastor Tera is going to the Conference in South Africa. Not only is she representing the Gold Methodist Church of Virginia, she is representing us, Epworth Methodist of Aylett. Keep her your prayers and if you can help her.

Ed's Thoughts & Commentary: This is from our Bible Study1 today; “Family – A Valuable Lesson.” The Primary Christian Value of our Church is WE ARE FAMILY. Pastor has talked about membership over the last weeks. Membership of our church makes us Family. Membership brings commitment, responsibly and many benefits beyond counting. It is like marriage. Some say, we can just live together and that is the same thing. It gives us some benefits with few commitments. We say we are Christians, but not a member of a church. Again, it gives us some benefits with few commitments. Our family and especially our children are watching us. What do they think? My soul tells me, by being a member of our church; Christ invites me to be a member of his family. He can count on me and I can count on Christ. Remember, these are ONLY my thoughts. Please READ the prayer below. It is from the lesson. Families, Gods & ours. They are merged together.

*************************************************
Prayer from the Study: Dear God, Your plan placed us in families. This act reveals Your wisdom. In families, we learn to love. Even though some families are broken, Your perfect will is wholeness. You have provided for us grace, mercy, and forgiveness to restore and heal. For that which we have received from families, we give You thanks. Help us by Your grace to love our families as You have loved us. And as You gave Yourself for us, may we also give ourselves to our families so that they, too, may learn how to love. In Jesus name, Amen

In todays “Ed's Thoughts & Commentary”, Todays Sunday School Lesson was “Six Characteristics of a Strong Family”. What a wonderful world this would be if everyone worked to make these characteristics strong in their families.

PASTOR’S Minute

Pastor Tera’s sermon was “Drinking Jesus’ Cup”. A timely message of membership on this day of Holy Communion. When we take the step to become a member of our church, we make 2 promises. 1st is to pledge service to our Lord and the 2nd is to pledge service to our church. I have posted our YouTube church service earlier today and I will post it again here. https://youtu.be/aq75WVEYCIo?feature=shared Every one of us, members or not, should listen to Pastor’s words again. You will be moved and impressed.

Pastor’s Adult Sunday School “Christian to the Core” is worth the stay after church. It is not a Bible Study, but a study of our life. The subject today was “Family Priority: God’s Building Block for Society”. I was so impressed with the section on the Characteristics of a Strong Family; I included it as my commentary at the end of this newsletter. Stay for this Adult Sunday School, it would be well worth your time, even if you just sat in the back and listen.

Ed's Thoughts & Commentary: This is from our Bible Study1 today. We need to work on these characteristics.. We are strong with some and weak with others. We need to teach others, especially our children, or nieces or nephews.

SIX CHARACTERISTICS OF STRONG FAMILIES
Researchers in more than 30 countries have found remarkable similarities among families
of different cultures. Families that describe themselves as strong commonly share a number of broad qualities or traits. In studying families around the world, it is significant to note that strong families in the global community are more similar to each other than they are different. The qualities they share in common far outstrip cultural distinctions. In short, God creates people for relationships, and we learn about relationships best within families in common ways. The researchers identified the following six important characteristics of strong families.

1. STRONG COMMITMENT
Strong families believe in the value of the family and consider family a priority in their lives. They are dedicated to one another’s well-being, and they invest time and energy in family activities. They recognize that sacrifices must be made for the sake of family togetherness, and family members make those sacrifices willingly.

2. SPENDING ENJOYABLE TIME TOGETHER
Strong families spend time together doing meaningful things. One study of 1,500 school children asked, “What do you think makes a happy family?” Few children replied that money, cars, fancy homes, television sets, or trips to Disney World made a happy family. Most children thought of a happy family as one that is active together and that genuinely enjoys time spent with other family members.

3. GOOD COMMUNICATION
Strong families communicate. In addition to commonplace exchanges, family members encourage one another to express their feelings and convictions, knowing they will be received with respect and understanding.

4. APPRECIATION AND AFFECTION FOR EACH OTHER
Strong families express appreciation for each other; they are intentional about encouragement and support. Family members seek to express their love in ways that others will receive as authentic. Families share a rich and genuine emotional life.

5. ABILITY TO SOLVE PROBLEMS AND REACT IN CRISIS
Strong families deal well with conflict. They have learned the value of using “win– win” strategies to solve disagreements. They face crisis situations with good communication and a sense of security. Family members are quick to be patient and readily forgive.

6. SHARED SPIRITUAL LIFE
Strong families have a shared spiritual life where, in the case of Christian families, the Bible, prayer, and worship are central. Such families experience faith as individuals and as a community. The family understands the importance of the spiritual well-being of each family member. This understanding is manifested in love, compassion, accountability, and celebration.
1 Christian to the Core is a curriculum developed by International Leadership Institute (ILI). ILI is a partner with the GMC for leadership training and discipleship resources.
