Do we think about Jesus coming back?

We read about Jesus as God's Chosen Servant in verses 15-21 of Matthew 12. People are following, Jesus is healing. But then he's ordering the restored to refrain from making him known. Jesus is fulfilling Messianic prophecy powerfully, but he's not here to empower a small militia. So he controls the timeline and the narrative because the time to go to the cross needs to come.

He still controls the timeline and the narrative. He will come back. It is our responsibility in the meantime to put our hope in that Healer. To hope in this way means to wait for Jesus's return actively and with eager anticipation.

Are we living lives of obedience, holiness, sanctification, and faithfulness as if today is the day of his return?

Has Jesus restored your soul, your marriage, your hope, or your joy?

When we read about the man with the withered hand in verses 9-14 of Matthew 12, we need to have in mind that we are that man. What tends to get overshadowed in this story amongst all the details of the Pharisees fiercely debating Jesus about healing on the sabbath is the fact that he actually healed this man miraculously. Jesus changed his life forever. He was broken, unable to fix himself, and he needed Jesus desperately to make him whole. Jesus takes action as the merciful and compassionate savior he is, even when he knows it was going to cost him.

The same is true for us. Our souls were shriveled and we were unable to fix ourselves. We found ourselves in desperate need of a kind, merciful and compassionate savior who knew the cross would be the cost of acting on our behalf.

The problem is we tend to act more like the Pharisees in our faith. We start to follow the rules to become "better" Christians and we look down on and judge other people for not following at the same pace we think we are.

Place the credit back on Jesus, the one who actually saves. How has Jesus made you whole?

What would your relationships look like if you chose mercy more?

Most of us struggle to extend mercy to even the most beloved people in our lives when they frustrate us. But in verses 1–8 of Matthew 12, Jesus tells us that God desires mercy more than sacrifice.

It's a wake-up call to all who lean on their own spiritual principles more than extending mercy to those who disturb them. This sermon checks our hearts to help us see if we even realize how much God desires His disciples to be people of mercy and compassion.
