🌊 Join Us This Sunday at St. John! 🌊

Come worship with us at 11:00 a.m. this Sunday, September 6!

Then at noon, stay for our Labor Day Sunday Cookout & Prayer Walk. We’ll enjoy a meal together and then walk around the construction site of our new Youth Retreat House, praying for this ministry, the people who will build it, and the generations of young people whose lives will be touched by it.

Worship. Food. Fellowship. Prayer. Hope.

Come be part of what God is building on Hatteras Island! ❤️🙏

Jesus said, “Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.” — Matthew 5:4

We grieve many things in life: the loss of a loved one, a home, our physical abilities, finances, a job, or a relationship. Grief can take many forms, and we do not always know how to navigate it alone.

St. John UMC will offer a Grief Support Class beginning October 2. The group will meet for five Fridays, from 10:00–11:00 a.m., and will be led by retired Physician Assistant Beverly Hockenberger, who has been a widow for 15 years.

Our time together will provide a safe and caring space to acknowledge our grief, share with others, and begin to explore what healing might look like. The group will use Understanding Your Grief by Alan Wolfelt as a guide.

The book is currently available on Amazon for approximately $8.67. https://a.co/d/08EvZF3C. If purchasing the book would be a hardship, please don't let that keep you from participating. The church will provide a copy for you. Simply reply to this email and let me know.

If you are interested in participating—or if you know someone who might benefit from this group—please share this invitation with them. You do not need to be a member of St. John UMC to attend.

Father Richard Rohr writes:

Mourning might be thought of as the prophetic “way of tears,” a letting down of our defenses... It is a movement, frankly, from the Ten Commandments to the eight Beatitudes.

Perhaps that is part of what Jesus is inviting us into: not to hide our grief or rush past it, but to bring our sorrow honestly before God, trusting that even in our mourning, Christ meets us with comfort and hope.

You are welcome here.

In the strong hope of Christ,

Pastor Gina

✝️ What cross are you carrying?

And what would it look like to let Jesus carry it for you?

Join us tomorrow at 11:00 AM at St. John United Methodist Church as we explore Jesus’ invitation:

“Take up your cross and follow me.”

We’ll consider the burdens we carry—fear, guilt, grief, resentment, pride, anxiety—and what it means to lay down the crosses that are crushing us so we can pick up the cross that looks like Jesus: sacrificial, self-giving love.

A life of unconditional love, servanthood, radical forgiveness, compassion, patience, grace, and humility.

🎶 Lift High the Cross
🎶 I Have Decided to Follow Jesus

Come bring your burdens. Come worship. Come discover the freedom of following Jesus.

🎒 BLESSING OF THE BACKPACKS — THIS SUNDAY

As our children and youth head back to school, we will celebrate with our annual Blessing of the Backpacks during worship. We’ll invite our students, teachers, school staff, and administrators to come forward as we pray for God’s guidance, protection, wisdom, and joy in the year ahead.

We’ll also be distributing school supplies to bless local students and schools on Hatteras Island. Any supplies that aren’t distributed through our congregation will be donated directly to our local schools.

God Bless!
