Today St. Andrew’s Knights of Columbus honored and celebrated three local hero’s from the Woodbridge Police Department, Avenel Fire Department and Avenel-Colonia First Aid Squad.

Congratulations to all recipients and thank you for your service to our community.

Last night at our annual Christmas Party, the Columbian Club of Avenel officially dedicated and renamed our banquet hall in honor of Brother, PGK,PFN Philip Svoboda.

Brother Phil was not only a charter member of our council, but also one of ten brothers who put their house up as collateral to secure the funding to build our council home. He will be celebrating his 102nd birthday in January and 82 years of service to the Knights of Columbus and the Columbian Club of Avenel.

On behalf of all of our members we would like to congratulate Brother Phil and thank him for all of his support, knowledge and wisdom over the decades.

Attached are a picture of Brother Phil with the plaque dedicating the hall in his name, along with his family that was able to be in attendance last night, including two of his children, one of his grandchildren and two of his great-grandchildren.

Theresa Konze is the wife of brother Emil Konze and mother of William Konze. She is being waked on Sunday from 2-5 at Day Funeral Home 361 Maple Place, Keyport 07735. We will meet at the council at 3:00 and carpool from there.

Tonight we had the honor of celebrating the 100th Birthday of charter member, PGK, PFN Philip Svoboda. This month also marked the 80th anniversary of Phil taking his 1st Degree. He has had 80 years of continuous service to the Knights of Columbus. Phil, along with his late wife Benetta, along side nine other members, put their house up as collateral to secure a mortgage to build our council home in the 1960’s.

Wendell Ubelhoer, Past Grand Knight, and Columbian Club President, passed away on July 9th.

The viewing will be Tuesday, July 12 from 4PM to 8PM at Costello-Koyen Funeral Home, 399 Avenel St, Avenel. The funeral liturgy will be at St. Andrew’s Church in Avenel at 9:30AM on Wednesday July 13 followed by burial at St. Gertrude's Cemetery.

On Tuesday the Knights will meet as a Brotherhood at 7:00PM at the Funeral Home.
