🌸 May is right around the corner, and that means it’s time to start prepping for how your school or classroom will celebrate May Crowning!
May Crowning is a Catholic school tradition where students honor the Virgin Mary by crowning her statue with flowers, reinforcing faith and community.
Here are some quick tips to make your crowning ceremony a success:
• Before the ceremony, read a book about Mary to get students excited. This is also a great time to explain the basics so the day feels joyful and meaningful, not nerve-wracking. The featured Marian books can be found on shop.ignatiusbookfairs.com
• Invite each student to create a mini spiritual bouquet for Mary. This could be as simple as a “thank you, Mary” or as elaborate as a rosary. Have them write the prayer on a piece of paper, fold it up, and place it in a basket to be offered during the ceremony.
• Have students make flower crowns or tissue paper flowers. Flower crowns can be a bit complicated, so this is better for students ages 7+. For younger students, making tissue paper flowers will be just as fun. Bluesusanmakes.com has a great tutorial if you need inspiration.
• Finally, get students involved in the ceremony. Students tend to be more engaged when they are called upon to be part of the celebration. They can sing Marian hymns, lead prayers, serve as lectors, crown Mary, or bring up the basket filled with prayer intentions.
