Our Building
B’nai Abraham Brenham Historic Synagogue

CTI has the great privilege to call Texas’ oldest active Orthodox Jewish synagogue its home. And like many of the members of the Austin Jewish community, the synagogue itself is a transplant. In 2015, it was moved from its original location in Brenham, Texas to the state’s capital. The Building’s History

In the 1860’s, Jewish settlers from

Eastern Europe began arriving in Brenham and formally established a congregation in 1885, and built its first synagogue in 1892. For the approximately 50 Jewish families living in Brenham at the time, the synagogue was the spiritual center of their town. Unfortunately, in the last half century, the size of the Jewish community of Brenham continuously decreased. Over the decades, Leon Tobin, a Brenham native, and his wife Mimi worked hard to maintain the historic building. However, the Tobins were determined not to let their synagogue turn into museum dedicated to Jewish past. Rather, they had a vision of dedicating it to Jewish future, filling it with Jewish life again. The Building’s Move

A bold plan was devised to move the building to Austin, one of the fastest growing cities in the country, which just so happened to be in need of a building for its Modern Orthodox congregation. Eventually, the plan became reality and the building completed the 90 mile move west to Austin’s Dell Jewish Community Center in early 2015. After several months of construction work, CTI finally moved in in August of the same year. Since then, the building has become the new home for CTI, which continues B’nai Abraham’s legacy by becoming a lively center of Austin’s Modern Orthodox Jewish life.

Congregation Tiferet Israel is pleased and honored to host Rabbi Dov Linzer, President and Rosh HaYeshiva of Yeshivat Chovevei Torah Rabbinical School, as our Scholar in Residence for 2026!

Rabbi Linzer served as YCT’s Rosh HaYeshiva for over 20 years (including the four years that Rabbi Millner attended.) Rabbi Linzer became its President in 2019 and assumed both the institutional and Torah-based leadership of YCT. In this dual capacity, Rabbi Linzer has set the vision for YCT as a Center of Torah and Torah Leadership, and, with an amazing team of colleagues and partners, oversees its growth, reach, and further development.

An acclaimed Torah and halakha scholar, Rabbi Linzer has been a leading rabbinic voice in the Modern Orthodox community for over 25 years. He has published over 100 teshuvot (responsa) and scholarly Torah articles, and hosts a number of highly popular Torah podcasts.

During his visit, Rabbi Linzer will deliver three talks:

May 15, Friday Night: Does (or Should) Halakha Talk Values? – What does it mean to live a halakhic life?

May 16, Shabbat Morning: Making Torah Accessible to All – How do we realize that ideal in our community and in our religious leadership?

May 16, Seudah Shlish*t: We Will Do and We Will Hear – Insights of Sfat Emet on Shavuot.
