This Sabbath, as our nation celebrates 250 years of independence, we will gather to remember a freedom enduring, more transformative even more ancient. Our Declaration of Independence proclaimed liberty from political tyranny; the gospel of Jesus Christ proclaims liberty from the tyranny of fear, sin, and death.

On this Sabbath day set aside from creation, we honor the blessings of civic freedom!
But we anchor our hearts in the freedom from God. “…behold, I have set before thee an open door, and no man can shut it: for thou hast a little strength, and hast kept my word, and hast not denied my name.” Christ has opened a door that no one can shut: freedom to walk in righteousness, to rest in grace, to live as citizens of a Kingdom that cannot be moved.

As we commemorate our nation’s 250th year, let us rejoice in the greater grace God has written into every believer’s life: “If the Son sets you free, you shall be free indeed.”

May this Sabbath highlight our gratitude for our country, deepen our commitment to our Savior, and remind us that true freedom is not just celebrated—it is lived out in our daily lives, and shared.
